Winning Across the Pond Outrigger paddlers garnered numerous medals at the Va’a World Elite and Club Sprint Championships at Dorney Lake in Windsor, United Kingdom. By William Johnson ➳ In August, our 6 open women, all OCC paddlers, captured two silver medals in the Elite Division 1000-meter and 1500-meter races, finishing second place to New Zealand. Many of our Outrigger paddlers partnered with paddlers from other Hawai‘i clubs for the Club Division, and they successfully took home many gold, silver and bronze medals. Team Hawai‘i had over 370 paddlers participating in this bi-annual event, easily the largest contingent, which included Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Sweden, Tahiti, Samoa, Singapore, Germany and England, among others. The races took place at Dorney Lake, the site of the 2012 Rowing Olympics, which is also near Windsor Castle. Most of the teams stayed in or near Windsor on the banks of the River Thames, enjoying the many shops and restaurants and taking advantage of the proximity to London (about a 30-minute train ride). The next World Sprints will be held in Hilo in 2024.
