General Manager’s Corner

ALOHA OCC ‘OHANA, Hard to believe that the Holidays are right around the corner. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in our Outrigger ‘Ohana a wonderful and safe holiday season and best wishes in the new year!

This month, I want to share information about the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation (ODKF). In July, ODKF elected Dr. Jenifer Bossert to a two-year term as President of the Board; she is the first Club member to serve in this leadership position since 2018. Jen joined the Outrigger Canoe Club 25 years ago and has continuously served on various

committees, including several years as Chair of the Canoe Racing Committee with oversight of the Macfarlane Regatta, three years as Club Captain, and six years on the Board of Directors. Jen is also a past Director of the O‘ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA) and a past Racing Committee Member of Moloka‘i Hoe. She has a solid understanding of the Club and what it stands for. For all these reasons, we are excited about Jen’s leadership of the foundation that bears our name.

From ODKF President Jenifer Bossert:

Aloha OCC ‘Ohana, Tyler, our wonderful GM, has been kind enough to share his column with me so I can write about ODKF, a nonprofit organization very dear to my heart, and deeply connected to the Outrigger Canoe Club. I was invited many years ago to serve on the ODKF Scholarship Selection Committee. In reviewing hundreds of applications from Hawai‘i’s student scholar-athletes, I was inspired by the outstanding character, community service, athletics and aloha spirit displayed by the candidates. It’s been a joy to represent the Club, bestowing financial support on these amazing athletes as they spread across the U.S. and the world for college and competition. It was this feeling that drew me back to volunteering for the committee year after year. After finishing my service on the OCC’s Board of Directors in 2019, I was invited to join the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation Board. During the pandemic years, we moved all of our meetings from the Duke Room to Zoom and our volunteer board and liaisons made sure the legacy of giving continued virtually.
