Building Confidence in Year Five
YEAR FIVE
As part of our Year 5 transition program on the Secondary Campus, we participated in many activities to help us prepare for moving from Primary to Secondary school. We got to try different Secondary subjects and join the REACH Peer Connections Workshop. This workshop was really fun and helped us learn about emotional literacy, self-awareness, and how to build respectful friendships. Through games and discussions, we started to understand our own strengths and how to connect with others in new places. Many students from past years said this was one of their favourite parts of Year 5 because it helped them feel ready and confident for Year 6 and beyond. - Tadana C & Katelyn B TERM 1 This term, the Year 5 students explored how Australia’s government works as part of their Inquiry Unit. They were fortunate to welcome the Honorable Andrew Giles MP, who spoke about his role in Parliament and answered thoughtful student questions about leadership and democracy.
Students also took part in an interactive incursion that brought the democratic process to life. Through a role play of Federal Parliament, they learned how laws are influenced, created, and passed. It was an engaging and informative start to the year that helped students understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens. TERM 2 Term 2 was filled with creativity, curiosity, and adventure. Students began by taking part in a Cartoon Drawing Workshop with professional artist Richard Galbraith. They learned how to use lines, texture, and expression to bring characters to life and proudly showcased their finished cartoons. The Year 5/6 Camp to Forest Edge was another highlight, with students challenging themselves through flying fox, archery, and team-building games. They supported one another and showed great resilience and teamwork. In Science, students investigated light and space, experimenting with reflection, refraction, and absorption. They finished the unit by writing and presenting reports on a space-related topic of their choice — from planets to black holes.
Gallery, where they admired artworks from the Medieval and Renaissance periods and explored Olaf Breuning’s Plan for the Planet exhibition. The visit deepened their appreciation for art and inspired their own creativity. In Geography, students examined how Europe, Asia, and North America connect with Australia through trade and culture. A visit to Preston Market allowed them to experience the sights, smells, and tastes of global diversity firsthand. Students also participated in a Secondary transition week, exploring subject rotations and working in teams to design imaginative creatures, blending fun, art, and collaboration. TERM 4 As the year draws to a close, the Year 5 students prepared for an excited and engaging Term 4. They are looked forward to excursions, new sports during 5/6 sport sessions, and creative learning activities across the curriculum. Many were eager to develop their persuasive writing and debating skills, while others prepared for next year by applying for leadership roles. The Term will finished on a high with special events such as the Christmas Concert, end-of-year awards, and Learner Agency Hour activities like Jump Rope, Uno, and Mindfulness. It’s been a wonderful conclusion to a year filled with learning, growth, and achievement.
TERM 3 Term 3 offered opportunities for both creativity and connection. The students visited the NGV International
