YEAR EIGHT

TERM 1 On Thursday, 24th April, Year 8 students travelled into the city to visit the Melbourne Museum as part of their Connection to Country subject. They explored the First People, Melbourne Story, and Forest galleries, engaging deeply with the exhibits and learning about culture, history, and the environment. It was fantastic to see students representing The Lakes Values with enthusiasm, pride, and curiosity, while actively participating in discussions and activities throughout the day. TERM 2 Some of our Year 7 and 8 Science students participated in a hands-on WaterWatch excursion to investigate the health of waterways and lakes in South Morang. Students explored key aspects of water quality testing, measuring factors such as air and water temperature, turbidity, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, ammonium, and phosphate levels. They developed practical skills while gaining a deeper understanding of environmental science and sustainability. A big thanks to Julie and the Merri Creek Management Committee for providing this enriching opportunity. TERM 3 Term 3 featured both sporting and creative experiences for our Year 8 students. This year has been full of exciting experiences and memorable moments for Year 8. In Term 1, the VIA students had an excursion in the city, where they explored the Australian Centre for the Moving Image at ACMI. It was a fantastic opportunity to explore the world of film, digital media, and creative storytelling. Term 2 brought even more excitement for the whole grade, with a visit to the Melbourne Museum where students discovered fascinating exhibits in Science, History, and culture. During the same Term, the Year 8 girls participated in a special incursion hosted by SheMaps, a drone program designed to inspire young minds in STEM and showcase the power of technology. Then in Term 3, class 8B had the chance to attend Whittlesea Tech School, where they engaged in hands- on workshops that blended innovation, problem-solving, and future-focused learning. These experiences have helped shape an inspiring year for Year 8, filled with exploration, creativity, and growth. - Jana N and Hiya D

determination and teamwork in their matches. Throughout the games, students improved their communication, coordination, and match skills. Their commitment to training, resilience, and sportsmanship was evident both on and off the court, and they showed growth in confidence and ability even during challenging games against Whittlesea and Epping Colleges. In addition, on Monday, 11th August, Year 8 Media students attended a Skills Taster Day at Whittlesea Tech School in Epping. They worked in teams to learn skills in podcasting, storyboarding, filming with a green screen, and app design, while also exploring some ‘old school’ technology such as the Nintendo 64. The day was engaging, collaborative, and provided students with inspiration for creative and technical projects. TERM 4 In Term 4, Year 8 students prepared for their Performing Arts Showcase, focusing on the theme “Women in Music.” They also worked toward final exams and participated in Step Up Week, gaining insights into their next stage of learning and preparing for Year 9. The term provided opportunities for reflection, celebration, and consolidation of their learning across both academic and creative areas, marking a strong finish to the year.
