THE GIFT OF A GARDEN Join Us at Al’s This Year

We don’t have a big yard at my house, but we sure make the most of it. Thanks to Louise’s green thumb, we have a garden full of everything you can imagine. At this time of year, the rhododendrons are starting to creep up. By the end of spring, lots of flowers will be in full bloom. I get untold enjoyment from the garden, but I can’t take any credit for it. My biggest contribution is my ability to stay out of the way. When Louise has an idea, I say, “Yes, honey.” When we need some heavy lifting, I call the landscaping company. And that is about it. It’s been an awesome experience to see how our garden has improved over the years. Every year, we seem to have more greenery. Louise assures me that it’s the result of learning more about the soil, climate, and other conditions in our neck of the woods. Some species of flora simply won’t take, and you don’t know until you try. The wonderful folks over at Al’s Garden & Home have been instrumental in helping us turn our home into a horticultural paradise. They’re responsive to our questions and suggest plants they think will work in our yard. Over the

years, we’ve introduced dozens — if not hundreds — of clients to the team at Al’s through our annual garden party at their location in Sherwood. It’s been going on for 18 years, and it seems to get bigger and better every year. When we started doing the event, our firm and Al’s were smaller than we are today. The first couple years, we held our events in a tiny classroom equipped with makeshift tables and whatever chairs we could find. Now, Al’s has multiple locations and a dedicated learning space. We even get the pleasure of having our class taught by local celebrity Judy Alleruzzo, co-host of “Garden Time.” I don’t know what she will be discussing at this year’s event, but you can bet it will be both fun and informative. In addition to learning, the event also includes free coffee, snacks, and a plant giveaway. Al’s is gracious enough to match each of the plants we purchase to hand out as prizes, so we often have over 25 plants. Of course, if you don’t win what you’re hoping for, you can always buy it at a 45 percent discount on the day of the event. In the 18 years we’ve hosted our client appreciation event at Al’s, our garden has grown almost as quickly as Al’s has. They’re now one of the biggest nurseries in the area and, at least in my opinion, they’re far and away the best. It’s awesome to see them flourishing. Given that many of our clients share the same passion for gardening as Louise, I’m not surprised our day at Al’s has become one of the marquee events on our calendar. We hope you’ll join us this April for another great day spent in the weeds. Feel free to call our office for more details. – Garry Li day

To Live Your Best Retirement CREATING A HOME CARE PLAN

When retirement approaches, you may be thinking about the freedom you’ll enjoy after putting in your last nine-to-five. It’s a culmination of years of hard work and a cause for celebration! Before you get to celebrate, though, it’s important to consider what kind of support you might need down the road. With our generation living longer than our parents, there’s a possibility that we may require additional support services. You and your spouse may not know if either of you will need in-home care, but considering this possibility and the financial factors that come with it can help you better enjoy this exciting phase of your life. In most cases, neither Medicare or Medicaid covers in-home care. There are some exceptions, like home- and community- based services that are state and locally funded and cover those who qualify through Medicaid. If you or your spouse are veterans and meet the requirements, you may be eligible for aid and attendance benefits. These benefits are paid for by the VA in addition to a veteran’s monthly pension. It may cover the

costs of in-home care for veterans who require the aid of another person or are housebound. Visit Benefits.va.gov to learn more.

Still, you may not want to rely on qualifying for one of these services. Consider adapting your estate plan to include designated in-home care. Meet with your attorney to review your living trust and see if it addresses a caregiver. Talk to your family members and loved ones about the possibility that you or your spouse may need this service. While a family member may offer to step into that role, consider how easily they will be able to carry it out. Even a part-time caregiver could provide you with support and make your family members feel like they are not doing it alone. Planning for the possibility that you may need in-home care services can help make your retirement even more enjoyable. Knowing you’ll have a close helping hand can ease your family’s worries and even strengthen your bond.

ADDING NUTRIENTS TO YOUR MEALS The Importance of Green Foods

Being healthy is at the forefront of many Americans’ minds. The nutrients you put into your system are critical to keeping your mind and body healthy. Everyone knows that staying away from junk, fried, and sugary foods is a good start, but knowing what to add to your diet is equally crucial. Leafy greens, such as kale, mizuna, and spinach, are rich in dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, and iron. They also contain vitamins C, K, and E. Adding these greens into your diet can support weight loss and reduce your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. To make sure you’re eating enough greens, divide your plate up between fruits, vegetables, grains, and meats. Vegetables or fruits should take up half of your plate. One-fourth should be lean proteins, and one-fourth should be whole grains. This guarantees that you’re eating a well-balanced meal and not overloading yourself with large portions of unnecessary calories.

When you eat a well-balanced meal, you provide your body with the right nutrients and the calories it needs. If you’re unsure how many calories you should eat to maintain your current weight, multiply your weight in pounds by 12. If you want to lose weight, start by subtracting 500 calories per week to lose approximately 1 pound per week. You can start adding greens into your diet by adding them as side dishes. For dinner, serve a bowl of steamed broccoli or green beans. Instead of grabbing a burger at lunchtime, pack a leafy green salad topped with protein, such as nuts or chicken. This time of year, soups and stews that contain leafy greens will warm you up. If you don’t enjoy eating greens, hide them in smoothies and juices. The more you eat leafy greens, the more you’ll develop a taste for them. Who knows? Before long, you might find yourself reaching for the broccoli instead of the potato chips when you’re craving a snack!

The Right Way to Donate After Spring-Cleaning DONATE WITH CARE

Spring is in the air, and it’s time to celebrate with another round of spring- cleaning. Banish the clutter and make room in your life for something new! Many charities see a sharp increase in donations as spring-cleaning season starts. Donating your used books, kids’ toys, and gently worn clothing allows your old items to have a second life. However, when filling that donation box, make sure you’re donating each item because it can do good and not just because you feel bad about throwing it away. Charities have a big problem with well-meaning citizens dropping off items that are better left in the trash. There are many items charities simply cannot handle. Most charities will have lists of items they can and cannot accept on their websites. Some items that you should not donate include:

Expired medications

Old TVs

Cribs

Loose remote controls

• Personal care items, like soap, shampoo, or makeup • Mattresses • Carpets • Tangled cords or phone chargers • Any broken, damaged, or dirty items

Everything is the best bagel flavor. This is not a matter of debate. Sprinkle the seasoning on popcorn for a delicious snack that will have people asking, “What does this remind me of?” EVERYTHING POPCORN

These items may be unsafe to sell, costly to ship, or impossible to refurbish effectively. When a charity regularly receives items they cannot use, they have to spend hours of manpower sorting through things that end up in the trash anyway. This process can be expensive for organizations with already-strained resources. Some local charities spend over $1,000 a year on dumpster and trash removal fees for unusable donations. While charities will have no choice but to throw unusable donations in the trash, there are services you can use to make your spring-cleaning eco-friendly, even for items you can’t donate. For example, if you have torn or stained blue jeans, reach out to Blue Jeans Go Green. This program keeps denim out of landfills by turning it into insulation. And while Goodwill can’t take your batteries or old flip phone, you can check out Call2Recycle.org to learn how to safely recycle your e-waste.

INGREDIENTS

2 teaspoons granulated garlic

3/4 cup popcorn kernels

2 teaspoons granulated onion

2 tablespoons flaky sea salt

Your donations can be a big help to local charities. Just don’t “donate” your garbage.

1/3 cup canola oil

1 teaspoon black sesame seeds 2 teaspoons white sesame seeds

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

INSTRUCTIONS

1. In a small skillet over medium heat, toast sesame seeds. Shake skillet often and cook until white seeds are golden and fragrant, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a small bowl and add garlic, onion, and salt. 2. In a large saucepan, combine popcorn kernels and oil. Cook over medium-high heat, covered, until popcorn kernels start to pop. Once popping, continue cooking and shaking the pan intermittently until popping ceases, about 3–5 minutes. 3. Transfer popcorn to a large mixing bowl. Pour in butter and toss to coat. Finally, add seasoning, toss again, and serve.

If you’re lucky enough to have been aboard a ship under full sail, chances are you know the thrill and serenity sailing can give you. If you’ve never been but have always wanted to know what it’s like to get out on the wind and waves, there are many great options available for beginners. Here are some ideas to inspire your next waterside vacation. START SMALL For those who dream of becoming a skipper one day, a great way to start is by sailing dinghies. These one-sail, beach-launch boats fit 1–2 people and can be rented at most water sports shops. If you want to make it a family experience, shops usually have 16-foot catamarans for rent as well. Catamarans have two hulls rather than one, making for a smoother, more spacious ride. If you’ve never sailed before, inquire about lessons. Most rental operations have instructors on hand who can show you the ropes. The great thing about sailing is that whether you’re in a 12-foot dinghy or a 60-foot sloop, the same basic principles, rules, and skills apply. SET SAIL FOR VACATION Take Your Next Trip Offshore

TAKE A DAY SAIL Many day-sail charters exist for those who want to go out a little farther than a dinghy would permit. If you’ve captained a boat and are familiar with the waters, you can apply for a bareboat charter. However, if you are inexperienced or simply don’t want a local guide at the helm, signing up for a day trip with a skipper and crew is a great option. DO A FULL CHARTER Short of owning your own vessel, chartering a boat for multiple nights is the closest you can get to living out your nautical dreams. Some of the most beautiful destinations on earth — from the Caribbean Sea to the Mediterranean — are best experienced from the deck of a sailboat. Letting the sea guide you to amazing snorkeling destinations, remote cays, and bustling harbors is the stuff of real adventure.
