Our theme this year is Reimagining Learning in the New World of Work: CURIOSITY, CHAOS & CONNECTION. See our full agenda and list of insightful speakers. Thank you for joining us.
Welcome Note
Good Morning
Welcome to the IITD National Learning & Development Conference 2022. Our theme this year is Reimagining Learning in the New World of Work; CURIOSITY, CHAOS & CONNECTION. Through this lens, we’ll consider how we, as Learning & Development professionals, should innovate, lead and transform ourselves in the changing learning landscape as we move from an old to a new paradigm. The current environment presents a unique opportunity for Learning & Development professionals to play a leadership role by spearheading their organisations’ strategic response to the changing future of work. A key challenge for Learning & Development leaders in this regard is managing the tension between meeting current skills requirements and enabling the workforce of the future.
Throughout the day, we will be discussing how organisations can future proof their L&D programmes through taking a skills-based approach to work and work design.
We will also consider the centrality of the learning and development agenda to investor analysis and the extent to which investors assess the strength of an organisation’s leadership team and their ability to deliver. To be effective in the new context in which we are all operating, the thinking of today’s leaders must be equal or superior to the complexity of the environment and development must be continuous. We will share a different model of leadership and a framework of leadership development fit for the future of work context. With the world changing faster than ever, we will share how organisations can build a culture of curiosity and align it with individuals taking responsibility for their own learning. Finally, we will discuss how organisations can address the talent gap through changing mindsets and embracing best practice in employing and supporting people with disabilities.
Welcome Note
In developing this year’s theme, we have listened closely to our members and have gathered a panel of thought leaders from global and indigenous organisations as we challenge our assumptions and position our thinking as talent professionals for the years ahead. Focusing on the future of the Institute is an opportunity to pay tribute to all that you, our members, have achieved and to thank you, most profoundly for the work which you continue to do in setting high standards for the learning and development profession and for your continued loyalty to the Institute. Through your work you crafted a vital bridge between your organisation and its workforce that will continue to provide the talent and the capacity for growth in the future. I would like to acknowledge our thanks to our sponsor for this event, HPC and partners, Enovation, Harvest, Ibec Academy, Invisio, and The Learning Rooms, I would also like to thank our wonderful exhibitors and please use the opportunity during our breaks to visit our sponsor and exhibitor stands while you enjoy your Roffey Coffee! We know from experience that it is your participation and engagement in the sessions that make this event such a vibrant experience, so I encourage you please to continue to engage with your usual enthusiasm!

PANEL - How is the Talent Agenda Influencing Investors’ Decisions?
KEYNOTE - Leading People with Purpose Today’s complex problems and challenges can no longer be tackled with the narrowly-focused, unconnected thinking of the past. In fact, complexity and uncertainty is growing much faster than leader capability. Oversimplified and fixed models of leadership and We are consistently told that our people are our most valuable assets, and that people are central to delivering the organisation’s strategy. But does this really matter to investors? When making decisions about investing in an organisation, to what extent do investors assess the strength of an organisation’s leadership team and their ability to deliver? Stuart Woollard , Co-Founder, The Maturity Institute Ian Curtin, Consulting Principal, Ogilvy Consulting Georgina Murphy phd, Senior Investment Manager, Irish Strategic Investment Fund leadership development do not acknowledge the inherent complexity of human behaviour and the context within which this behaviour occurs. To be effective in this new context, the leader’s thinking must be equal or superior to the complexity of the environment and development must be continuous. In this session, we will cover a model of Adaptive Leadership and a framework of Leadership Development fit for the future of work context.

KEYNOTE - So much potential!
2:30PM
According to the World Health Organisation, fifteen percent of the world’s population have a disability. That’s a billion people. Organisations often miss out on so much talent by mistaken assumptions and/or unconscious discomfort when engaging with people with disabilities. Talented people are often overlooked, not just by physical barriers but also attitudinal barriers. Changing mindsets could mean a lot of job vacancies filled. Research shows that organizations that embrace best practice in employing and supporting people with disabilities, outperform their peers. In these days of almost full employment, enlightened organisations are already recognising and tapping into this talent. KEYNOTE - The Curious Advantage
3:10PM
What is the role of Curiosity to navigating some of today’s tensions and pressures? What are the benefits of curiosity and how can I use it to my advantage? How can I drive my curiosity and how can it help me to manage Unease and Uncertainty? With the world changing faster than ever, how can I be ready? How do organisations build a culture of curiosity and align it with individuals taking responsibility for their own learning? Celebrating success in innovative learning and development initiatives
CURIOSITY IN A CHAOTIC WORLD .
In a world of change and chaos, HPC's Kevin Hannigan explores how curiosity might see us through.
In perhaps his most self-effacing quote, Albert Einstein is reported to have said “I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious”. For those of us lacking Einstein’s gifts, this quote brings great hope but also shines a light on an often under-valued trait: that of curiosity. In a chaotic world dominated by individuals loudly claiming to have answers and telling us what the future will bring, perhaps we need to celebrate the people asking questions and those intent on understanding the world a little more. Where opinion and discourse feel even more polarised than ever, surely we should be spending more time seeking alternative perspectives. How do we deal with the challenges we face and how do we find new solutions that may solve some of our current problems?
When we are curious, we view tough situations more creatively.
Harvard Business Review
ooking at where the world is now, it is hard not to think that it is in chaos. Unprecedented technological change, political instability, war on the borders of Europe, a global grain L crisis, financial instability and climate change are now part of our daily discourse. This sense of chaos is no different in the world of business where social, political and technological changes are exacerbated by post-pandemic pressures and the phenomena of the “great resignation” and “quiet quitting”.
Our brains are hardwired to be curious. Research from Berkley shows that we are rewarded for curiosity by dopamine, which is released in the face of a new experience. Other research shows that curiosity is associated with higher levels of positive emotions, and greater psychological well-being. It may be the case that people who are already happier tend to be more curious, but since novelty makes us feel good through the release of dopamine, it seems possible that it works both ways. Curious people also seem not only to do better at work through greater enjoyment, but also to have a greater ability to concentrate. It also appears that a number of organisations take great steps to hire curious individuals and to hardwire curiosity into their practices. Companies such as Google and IDEO have designed their hiring practices to identify the curious and Pixar has developed an approach to idea generation called “plussing” that involves building on ideas without using judgmental language. Instead of rejecting a sketch, for example, a director might find a starting point by saying, “I like Woody’s eyes, and what if we…?” Someone else might jump in with another “plus”. This technique allows people to remain curious, listen actively, respect the ideas of others, and contribute their own. Listening to the scientific research, the case for curiosity is compelling: Curious people are more likely to expand their social circles and the outcome of meeting people from different backgrounds with different perspectives is, unsurprisingly, greater empathy. Todd Kashdan took his research one step further and found that people were rated as warmer and more attractive if they showed real curiosity in a social exchange. This implies that demonstrating curiosity towards someone is a great way to build your closeness with them. However, this isn’t just about building closeness for its own sake. Research from Dr Jodi Halpern has shown that when doctors are genuinely curious about their patients’ perspectives, both report less anger and frustration, make better decisions, leading to better patient outcomes. If all this wasn’t enough, the habit and practice of curiosity also appears to strengthen our social fabric. This is the Lorenz “Butterfly Effect” where the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil can cause a tornado in Texas. In a complex, even chaotic world, we may not be able to control or even determine how a complex system evolves, but we can control the choices we make that determine the conditions the system faces. Our hardwired sense of curiosity, which has served us for millennia, may turn out to be the trait that we didn’t realise we needed for this era. In chaos theory, small differences in initial conditions can yield widely diverging outcomes rendering long-term prediction of their behaviour impossible.
“
Asking questions and being curious every day can fuel both personal and professional growth and propel us to success. A curious mindset and relentless questioning will lead you down a path of discovery, creativity, innovation, and growth.
Todd Kashdan
