Some new provincial infrastructure funding aid is available and East Hawkesbury Township wants to get some of that money for storm sewer work. Township council approved a proposal from administration to send an application to a new municipal infrastructure assistance program that the provincial government has announced. The Municipal Housing Infrastructure 1SPHSBN)FBMUIBOE4BGFUZ8BUFS4USFBN (MHIP) aids municipalities with infrastructure work that deals with their water systems, with emphasis on projects that deal with the health and safety needs of residents. ‘;k,mThe township has doing some improvements to the storm sewer system JO UIF 7JMMBHF PG 4U&VHÍOF #FDBVTF PG limited funding available in the municipal budget, those improvements have focused on replacing parts of the western portion of the village’s storm sewer system. The new provincial aid program could help the township deal with the eastern section of the village storm sewers, which administration noted are “shovel ready” with plans and cost estimates all worked out. Administration also noted that the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) wants to do repaving work on Labrosse Street, which is a designated county connector road. The eastern part of the storm sewer system needs replacing before that happens.

Le secrétaire au Trésor, Scott Bessent, et le secrétaire au Commerce, Howard Lutnick, ont été les principaux architectes de la stratégie économique de M. Les pourparlers de paix directs entre l’Ukraine et la Russie ont échoué après deux heures la semaine dernière. Les deux pays ont libéré chacun 1000 prisonniers de guerre avant la fin des réunions. Avis de portes ouvertes n o 1 – Évaluation environnementale de l ’ agrandissement de l ’ installation de gestion des déchets de Mayer Mayer Waste Management (781998 Ontario Inc.) a entrepris une évaluation environnementale (EE) en vertu de la Loi sur les évaluations environnementales (LEA) 1990 afin d’augmenter la capacité totale approuvée du site d’élimination des déchets Mayer à Hawkesbury, en Ontario, de 650 000 m³. Cette augmentation proposée ne modifierait ni le type ni le volume annuel des déchets actuellement acceptés sur le site. Elle permettrait à Mayer Waste Management de continuer à recevoir des déchets domestiques et industriels solides non dangereux, tout en assurant une élimination rentable et écologique pour ses clients locaux. L’évaluation environnementale examinera les effets potentiels de l’agrandissement du site d’enfouissement sur l’environnement et la collectivit é environnante afin de garantir un aménagement sécuritaire. Le processus Le 19 décembre 2024, le ministre de
l ’ Environnement, de la Protection de la nature et des Parcs a approuvé le cadre de référence pour l ’ agrandissement de l'installation de gestion des déchets Mayer. Une copie du cadre de référence approuvé est disponible sur le site Web du projet: https://mayerexpansionea.com/project- reports. Cette étude sera réalisée conformément aux exigences de la LEA. Ses résultats seront consignés dans un rapport d’évaluation environnementale, qui sera soumis au ministère de l’Environnement, de la Protection de la nature et des Parcs pour examen. À ce moment, les membres du public, les communautés autochtones et les autres parties intéressées seront informés du moment où l’évaluation environnementale pourra être consultée.

Notice of Public Open House #1 for the Mayer Waste Facility Expansion Environmental Assessment Mayer Waste Management (781998 Ontario Inc.) has initiated an environmental assessment (EA) under the Environmental Assessment Act (EAA) 1990 to increase the total approved capacity at the Mayer Waste Disposal Site in Hawkesbury, Ontario by 650,000 m 3 . The proposed increase would not change the type or annual volume of waste currently accepted at the Site and will allow Mayer Waste Management to continue to receive solid non-hazardous domestic and industrial waste and provide cost-effective and environmentally sound waste disposal to local customers. The environmental assessment will assess the potential effects of the proposed landfill expansion on the environment and surrounding community to ensure it can be safely developed. The Process On December 19, 2024, the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks approved the terms of reference for the Mayer Waste
Facility Expansion. A copy of the approved terms of reference is available at the project website: https://mayerexpansionea.com/project-reports. This study will be carried out in accordance with the requirements under the EAA. The results from the study will be documented in an environmental assessment report, which will be submitted to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for review. ASPARAGUS HERALDS THE SUMMER SEASON a chemical which is related to methanthiol – the essence of skunk spray.

olive oil and perhaps shavings of Parme- san cheese is an excellent way to highlight this bit of early summer. Grill the spears in batches according to their diameter for even cooking. When the season is moving toward its close, a classic cream of asparagus soup may be in order; garnish it with the delicate blanched tips and a drizzle of cream or olive oil to present it simply and beautifully. Another classic, asparagus Polonaise, is ready for a culinary comeback when it comes to the spears: dress cooked hot asparagus with hard-boiled egg yolk that has been passed through a fine-meshed sieve, drizzle with melted butter and golden-toasted breadcrumbs. As a salad, mix grilled asparagus pieces with a bit of pesto, Parmesan and perhaps some slices of smoked salmon. Toss with olive oil and lemon juices, a few croutons and top with a sunny-side up egg. Garnish with Parmesan shavings. For the morning meal, there are few breakfasts as delicious as an omelette with fresh asparagus tips and a few scallions, cut on the bias, for garnish. Simple and scrumptious. While fresh asparagus is best, remember that asparagus is remarkable as a preserve, so consider a quick pickle. To do that, combine a mix of vinegars with about 100 grams of sugar per litre of liquid. Add a couple of peppercorns, some garlic and spices and herbs like tarragon or rosemary. Boil the mixture, pour it over the asparagus in jars and store in the fridge. You will be able to enjoy the local asparagus of May and long after the fields have been picked clean. A centuries’ old dish The ancient Romans loved the stalk; none other than Julius Caesar simply ate it with his hands. There’s even a Roman phrase: “Faster than you can cook asparagus.” Centuries later, ancient chefs created special cooking vessels which kept the thicker stalks submerged in the cooking liquid while leaving the delicate tips above water to be steamed. On occasion, you might come across antique serving bowls inventively designed specifically for the for the shape of aspara- gus which have hollow sides that were filled with boiling water to keep the freshly cooked asparagus warm. At the table, beurre noisette, with its dark hazelnut flavour and colour, has been drizzled over asparagus for centuries of dining. Asparagi alla Parmigiana is an authentic dish of Emilia-Romagna, wherein resides Parma, Italy: cooked asparagus tips are sprinkled generously with Parmesan cheese and melted butter. In Tuscany, a food Mecca if there ever were one, asparagus soup is made with saffron, pine nuts and pistachios. White asparagus, a more expensive ver- sion of the vegetable, but one that retains a certain perceived luxury quality, is popular in Europe. It is grown covered with mounds of earth to inhibit chlorophyll production and has to be harvested by being cut under- ground, a labour-intensive process that adds to its cost. Wherever you get your asparagus, use the time-honoured manual method of preparing asparagus: gently bend the stalk with the fingers of both hands lightly holding opposite ends – aiming for the point where woody and tender meet – and snap it off. If needed, you can finish the preparation by shaving the remaining tougher end with
Along with ramps, fiddleheads and rhu- barb, asparagus is a harbinger of summer, a clarion that the winter is behind us and fresh produce is starting to roll out of farmers’ fields. There aren’t many chefs, restaurant patrons and home cooks who don’t look forward to the season. Farmers’ markets are the best bet for fresh, local asparagus: try eating a beautiful green stalk raw immediately after it has been picked: it has amazing flavour and juiciness. The season is short but sweet The crop grows well in many areas in the southwestern part of the province, according to Asparagus Growers of Ontario, but there are a few nearby growers, such as Jardin Rochon Gardens in Edwards, Ont., if you are able to visit them at area farmers’ markets. Depending on the species, the plant’s earliest, most tender stalks might be a vibrant apple green with a tip tinged with purple – the colour that we associate with royalty. And the slender vegetable is indeed a royal guest as it starts to appear on res- taurant menus. In fact, the earlier in the season, the sweeter the asparagus. Asparagus stalks grow from underground rhizomes and because they must be picked by hand it helps explain the vegetable’s price at times. Generally, asparagus season runs between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day – key dates that should already be in your calendar. As he season rolls through its prime months of May and June and approaches July, the rhizomes begin to weaken and become depleted leaving the asparagus less flavourful. As for the odoriferous “asparagus pee” phenomenon, it happens to many people who eat asparagus but not everyone. A compound called asparagusic acid is metabolized into

Adding a bit of fennel to the butter gives a lovely anise flavour to the dish. Du propane vert pour décarboner le séchage du grain
Saviez-vous que les mauvaises herbes peuvent être bénéfiques à la ferme?
L’Association du propane a lancé, en novembre 2024, un projet pilote de propane vert dans le séchage du grain avec l’objectif de mesurer la performance de ce combustible et les diminutions de gaz à effet de serre (GES) qu’il permet réellement. Le propane vert utilisé dans le cadre du projet est produit à partir de résidus forestiers. Jean- Maxime St-Hilaire, porte-parole de l’Association, indique qu’il pourrait également être produit à partir de résidus agricoles, dont les gains environnementaux seraient même plus élevés. Le but ultime consiste à construire une usine de propane vert, mais avant d’y arriver, il faut tester le produit. Les essais ont été réalisés dans deux séchoirs de Covris Coopérative, l’un à Baie-du-Febvre et l’autre à Parisville. « Ce qu’il y a de beau avec le propane vert, c’est qu’il n’y a aucune modification d’infrastructure requise », souligne M. St-Hilaire. Advenant que l’énergie produite par le propane vert et sa diminution de GES
soient satisfaisantes pour le séchage des grains, l’industrie pourrait passer aux étapes suivantes, soit de trouver des investisseurs, d’identifier la technologie de production et de construire l’usine. Le séchage des grains exige une forte consommation énergétique concentrée sur une courte période lors des récoltes. Il a déjà été démontré que l’électrification du séchage entraîne un retour sur investissement peu profitable pour la majorité des producteurs. Selon Jean-Maxime St- Hilaire, toutefois, le propane vert se positionne comme une solution pratique et abordable pour réduire les émissions de GES. Si l’ensemble du propane utilisé pour le séchage des grains était vert, cela pourrait équivaloir à 6000 véhicules retirés des routes par année en matière d’émissions de GES, calcule l’Association québécoise du propane. La grande question demeure le prix du fameux propane vert. Sera-t-il abordable? « Il est trop tôt pour le dire », répond le porte-parole.
Toutes les mauvaises herbes ne méritent pas une réputation déplorable! La preuve? Certaines d’entre elles peuvent être avantageuses en milieu agricole! 1.Elles peuvent servir de nourriture : la folle-avoine, le kochia et le chiendent constituent un fourrage nutritif s’ils sont coupés tôt. Ces plantes peuvent ainsi enrichir le régime alimentaire du bétail, contribuant à améliorer sa santé et sa productivité. 2.Elles favorisent les organismes bénéfiques : les mauvaises herbes peuvent servir de refuge aux guêpes et aux syrphes, qui participent à la lutte contre les parasites dans les cultures. Elles fournissent en outre des sites de
nidification
et des
sources de
nourriture aux oiseaux.
3.Elles peuvent augmenter le rendement des cultures : dans les champs de haricots ou de pois, par exemple, les mauvaises herbes peuvent réduire les dommages causés par le vent et aider à la stabilité du sol. De plus, lors des années très humides, leur présence dans les champs de lentilles peut contribuer à une floraison précoce, ce qui améliore le rendement global. Bref, au lieu de considérer les mauvaises herbes uniquement comme une nuisance, rappelez-vous désormais leurs potentiels bienfaits!
