SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS In the first of a new series highlighting recent additions to the BGA network, we visit a place steeped in history and cultural heritage to learn more about the Faculty of Economics at the University of Coimbra in Portugal. Compiled by Tim Banerjee Dhoul
HISTORY The University of Coimbra (UC) is among the oldest universities in the world. It was

founded in Lisbon by King Denis, also known as the Poet King, in 1290 under the customary name for a medieval university, ‘ studium generale ’. It moved to Coimbra twice temporarily in the 14th century before settling there permanently in 1537. The Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra (FEUC) is one of the university’s eight current faculties and was established in 1972.

COURSES FEUC offers four degrees at bachelor’s level, in economics, sociology, management and
since 2013. “Situated on a hill overlooking the city, the University of Coimbra with its colleges grew and evolved over more than seven centuries within the old town… Coimbra offers an outstanding example of an integrated university city with a specific urban typology,” reads UNESCO’s description. Situated in central Portugal, the city is the country’s fourth-largest urban area after Lisbon, Porto and Braga. Its population is around 150,000, with approximately 500,000 in the wider Coimbra region.

Since 2007, there has also been a Portuguese-language executive MBA that can be completed in four terms, with classes held on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. Online and hybrid courses are available through its Association for University Extension (APEU), which was formed in 1993.
