3 Reasons You Need a Business Attorney

If you’re reading this article, you’re wondering how you can make money for your business by having a business attorney on your team. A lot of people look out into the world and think, “Well, attorneys are kind of a luxury item for wealthy businesses, and I’m not a wealthy business, so I can’t afford that luxury.” Other people look at it the other way around and say, “Well, wealthy businesses have attorneys. I want to be a wealthy business, so I’m going to get an attorney on board and find out how that can help out.” There are probably a hundred reasons why having an attorney on your team can make money for your business. I just want to focus on three of them. The first thing I want you to know is that if you have a business and you hire an attorney for that business, the money your business spends on the legal fees is a tax-deductible expense; that’s coming basically out of pre-tax dollars. Second, and this is my favorite, how do you think people treat your business and you as a business owner when they know you have a business attorney on your team? How do you treat other businesses when you know that they have an attorney on the team? Along the same line, what if you know that the other business not only has an attorney on the team, but they also meet with that attorney regularly and discuss business strategy, pending items, and things that they’re looking for in the future? I bet you’ll give that business an extra level of respect and play

it straight with them. And so, I invite you to think about how that will work for you if people you do business with know that you run everything past your attorney. The third thing I hope you will think about is that having an attorney on your team can help you spot risks you may not have been aware of and solve them for pennies rather than thousands of dollars. The issues an attorney can help spot early on, while there’s an easy and available solution, are worth gold to you — as opposed to getting into a problem down the road and possibly even getting sued or having an employee dispute that will cost tens of thousands of dollars to resolve, if not more. So, I encourage you to consider these three things. It’s tax deductible anyway, you’ll get oodles more respect for your business if people know you’re consulting with a business attorney regularly, and your attorney will help you to spot risks and resolve them before they become a problem for your business. If you have any other questions about what it would mean for your business to have an attorney on the team, give us a call.
