ISSUE 3

Diary of an HR Manager Sunday - 10 days later 9.30 am Local (4.30 pm BST) With a temperature of 24 C and a gentle sea breeze in my face, I strolled along to the bakery for breakfast. Among a couple of things on my mind were some ideas on revamping the onboarding and induction programme to bring together recorded content and some live workshops to go over the material. Particularly important was to emphasise the roles and responsibilities of both managers and staff. We were already implementing a digital assistant to answer queries on company rules and legislative issues, and I felt that this would reinforce the message. The second thing of note was a discussion I had on Friday evening before I went away. A connection of mine was moving on to an HR Director role based in Birmingham, and her CEO had dropped me a note to ask if I was interested in taking over her job. I’d said I’d think about it while I was away. Well, I’d thought about it and had decided to pass, mainly because the programme of changes in HR I’d started 20 months ago needed at least another 9 months to complete, and I wanted to see it through. The time to look around would be after that. I will confirm by email later this morning. When you’re away from the day job, the ideas come thick and fast, and I’d been jotting them down for follow-up when I got back. Management team had confirmed the job flexibility proposals, and the HR group was advising staff via self-service of the options and the timelines for decision. We’d allowed plenty of time for this to bed in; the HR system would record new work patterns for each individual, so no control issues there.
