That’s so interesting, that you were able to incorporate your passions into your apprenticeship. And how appropriate that someone from a new generation of payroll professionals would recognise the dangers of staying stuck in the past. Yes, it was for Christmas 2023 and the future ghost was about the fear of AI! Did it surprise you how many of the skills and interests of your ‘digital generation’ are desirable in payroll? How many avenues there are to pursue? Yes. I attended an Association of Bureau Managers event with some colleagues and I learned that Cox & Co. was quite far ahead with tech. I used it to do things like embed videos in emails to help people understand their payslips and improve accessibility with digital checklists when filling out manual forms to extract maximum information

efficiently, without communication barriers like handwriting or ESL. We can make them more accessible by adapting fields. There’s so much in communication that tech can do. And as you finish your final exams, where do you see your path in payroll leading next? I’m interested in the bigger picture of the business I think, so another apprenticeship and then taking the data analyst or business analyst route. What would you say to our future Payroll Students of the Year and to those coming into the industry for the very first time? I would say talk up your tech skills and talk about the things you can do. Don’t be afraid to offer your opinion. It’s an employer’s responsibility to listen and appreciate feedback too, your opinion has value.
