sight. She siezed the opportunity pre- sented to her. We can always do good, but there are occasions, such as this, which come but once in a life-time. Thank God, there are yet blessed Marys in the world, sitting at His feet, drink- ing in His life, learning His will, and pouring out upon Him the sacrificial offering of unbounded love. 6. The Conspiracy. "Wh at will you give me." Judas is still on the scent of shekels. If Mary has, as he thought, wasted her money, he will waste no time in bartering his Lord. Mary sought and found opportunity to honor Him; Judas will seek and find opportunity to be- tray Him. What is wrong in the heart of Judas? "Love of money," a seed sin, " t he root of all evil" 1 Tim. vi:10. The love of money leads to the commission of all the sins in the decalogue. Men worship it, make it a god. For it, they break the Sabbath, leave and dishonor parents, and commit murder. They covet it, they steal it, they bear false witness for it. Women sell their vir- tue for it. When a man oi. woman becomes pos- sessed with a longing for money, they may well tremble and fear. " Th ey that will be rich, fall into divers temp- tations," 1 Tim. vi:9. What tremendous power has this love for money, when it can prompt one, who has for three years, walked in the presence of the matchless Christ, to barter Him for thirty pieces of silver.
incident. The spirit of criticism is the spirit of Anti-Christ. "Love thinketh no evil—love vaunteth not itself." Let us encourage all who are seeking to serve and sacrifice for Christ, even if it seems not to be in wisest fashion, ac- cording to our human wisdom. Pray for them; counsel with them, but raise no blighting, blistering word of condem- nation against them. 4. The Condemnation of Jesus. " Wh y trouble ye the woman," Matthew records. John writes, " L e t her alone.'' The Lord graciously re- ceived the offering and now generously shields the offerer. When Judas touched her with his stinging rebuke, he touched Christ's heart, for He bore this woman on that kingly heart. ' ' This is beautiful work she hath done.'' How sweet, to her ears, these words of approval; how comforting to her heart! Jesus reads her motive, interprets her act in her loving desire to honor Him, and com- mends her. 2 Cor. viii:12. She had wrought a greater work than she knew. She had made a great sacri- fice, without counting the cost, now He gave her the "exceeding abundantly" more than had entered into her thoughts. If she had perfumed His precious person for His burial, He now anoints her head with precious praise and pours upon her name a heavenly aroma, sending it down through the centuries to be an inspiration and bless- ing to the whole church.
