Movie Theaters
Movie business projections hint at happy ending for 2025 I n 2024, about 76% of Americans ages 12 to 74—or approximately 200 million people—went to the movies at least once, according to the Cinema United, which represents more than 34,000 movie screens in all 50 states. CU’s membership includes the largest cinema chains in the world, as well as hundreds of independent theater owners. In 2025, it’s believed that at least 110 movies will be produced and released at more than 2,000 locations in the U.S. and Canada. This positive trend is expected to continue into 2026, with more than 50 wide releases already slated to launch that year, and distributors aggressively laying claim to the most sought-after release dates. Production of tentpole movies has made a resurgence in recent years, a trend that will continue, according to CU. Tentpole movies are films projected to earn a lot of money, and also to help persuade people to spend money on products connected with them. They are typically big-budget films whose earnings are expected to compensate the studios for their less profitable movies. The number of family-friendly, PG-rated films projected to be released this year at 2,000-plus locations around the country stands at 20, up from 18 in 2024. This continues a clear trend that has seen greater emphasis on movies for the entire family. As many as 11 PG-rated movies brought in $1.2 billion domestically in 2022; in 2024 that increased to 18 PG movies earning $2.8 billion . — JSD Source: Cinema United
