Roske and Zach Wilson. Cur- rans was a key player on Gil- bert’s two state title teams, and he capped an impressive career with a seventh-place finish at state a season ago. Roske had arguably his best round of the season at state (79) that placed him 17th overall, and Wilson was a top-10 player at state in 2023. That leaves three returning
members for the Tigers this spring, and they’ll serve as the nucleus of a team that has lofty goals yet again. Seniors Ryan Lynch and Hud- son White were varsity contrib- utors on the 2022 state championship squad and they’ve remained in the lineup throughout their careers. Class- mate Logan Youngberg was part of the third- and fourth-
place state teams in each of the past two seasons. “The three returning seniors worked really hard over the summer,” Lester said. “Ryan played in a lot of tournaments, both in and out of the state, and he had some success. And he’s worked really hard on the men- tal part of his game and course management.” Lynch turned in an 81 at the state tournament last May, and he’s poised to take over that leadership role at the top of the lineup. Lester knows he has the game to be one of the top players in the state. “He has all of the tools to be very good, and he’s always been a really good putter,” Lester said. White is a lefty who can put a charge into the ball off the tee, and Youngberg has consistently improved throughout his tenure with the Tigers. If they can match Lynch this spring, it will give Gilbert a one-two-three veteran punch that could make the team incredibly formidable. “Hudson is really good about, if he gets in trouble, not letting it get to his head,” Lester said. “Now we need him to step up to help the younger kids and be that leader.” Lester says freshman Johnny Bouska will play a key role with the team this spring as well.
Lester got an early glimpse at his game and the skill he pos- sesses a year ago when Bouska served as a manager as an eighth grader. “He’s going to be in the mix,” Lester said. “A lot of his strength is he knows the game well and he’s not too hard on himself. He has played in a lot of tournaments as well.” Brody Hague, a senior, missed all of last season be- cause of injury, but he’ll be amongst the players battling for a varsity spot. Taylor Dukes, Gray Woodin, Grant Johnson, and Easton VanCleave will all be in the mix as well. Defending state champion ADM returns just two players off its varsity roster from a season ago, and one of the graduates was 2024 individual medalist Easton Korell. Waverly-Shell Rock, the 2024 state runner-up, brings back four players, and returning third-place finisher MOC-Floyd Valley returns the most firepower with five players. MOC-Floyd Valley ended Gil- bert’s two-year run atop the 3A standings in 2023. Lester isn’t quite sure just yet where Gilbert fits into the 3A picture, but she certainly ex- pects her team to be at state come late May. That’s one goal that will never, ever, change.
