Did you know that only 40% of kids in our county are ready for kindergarten? That means 60% of preschoolers could face significant uphill battles to be successful in school and in life. Studies have shown that many children who aren’t kindergarten ready struggle throughout their academic careers and can ultimately have reduced rates of employment, lower earnings, and higher rates of using social welfare programs and being incarcerated.

The Anne Arundel County Public Library has stepped up to address this issue in a whole new way. In late October, we launched an expanded kindergarten readiness program. Thanks to nearly $600,000 in funding from the County Executive and County Council for two electric vehicles and six new staff, we can more regularly visit daycare centers, community events and go into neighborhoods where residents have barriers to getting to the library. Our highly-trained staff can help parents and caregivers prepare their children for kindergarten by teaching the five practices of early literacy: talking, singing, reading, writing and playing! While we’ve been offering the popular Every Child Ready to Read storytimes at our 16 locations for years, we can now expand our reach into the communities who need us most. But kindergarten readiness is about more than just storytimes and books. We recognize that to have a school-ready child, all the needs in a family must be addressed. That’s why we offer resources to strengthen the entire family from job training, computers and Wi-fi to social workers, health screenings and parenting classes. Visit our website at aacpl.net to learn more about all we offer. If you’d like to support our kindergarten readiness programs, consider donating at aacpl.net/donate . Public funding can’t do it all. We need your help to ensure all county kids are ready for school!

Reading aloud to children from birth helps strengthen language skills and build vocabulary — two important tools for learning to read. Register online at aacpl.beanstack.org . Keep track of the reading you’ve done on the Beanstack app or with the logs provided by the library. Earn stickers and prizes along the way. When you get all the way to 1,000 you’ll receive a new book to take home – and keep!
