At this time of year, many of us pause to reflect on donations we have made and may still wish to make in the upcoming year. Let me share a personal story about why I love supporting the library. Last summer, our 12-year-old grandson came for a visit, and we dropped into the new Busch Annapolis Library. He was captivated! He explored the various spaces, asked questions about the design and simply let his mind walk through all the opportunities he saw. At one point, he stopped and said, “You know, Nana, this is a place for all the community, isn’t it?”

Help Power Up Your Librarians! Pay it forward by purchasing any bag of coffee from Ceremony Coffee Roasters’ Annapolis Roastery (90 Russell St., Suite 500) or the Riva café (2329 Forest Drive) to donate to library staff. Ceremony will take care of the rest and have them dropped off to the library for your local librarians. Available through January 2023.
So why do my husband Doug and I give to the library? Because we know that public funding can’t do it all . Our libraries offer free programs, services and resources that enrich and strengthen our diverse community. At our libraries, all are welcomed and gather for all kinds of reasons – a place where we can experience and invest in the richness that is community, our community . I love how our grandson recognized the value of our library. Through every turn, his mind exploded with all the possibilities the library offers. Our grandson saw it, and I know you see it too. I invite you to explore and experience a new-to-you branch (there are 16!) with fresh eyes, just as he did. I think you will find even more things to love about it, both in the stacks and beyond. I invite you to join me in making a difference by donating to the library. There are many worthy causes, but I know you will agree that the library is worth your investment. Thank you for loving your wonderful library. Together, we can continue to make it even better. Karen Smith with her grandsons.

Kindergarten readiness describes what kids should know and be able to do when they start school. Sixty percent of children in Anne Arundel County are not ready for kindergarten. Studies show that kindergarten readiness is the key to long-term academic success by impacting drop-out rates, future employment outcomes and better health and lifestyle habits. Your library is an established educational leader and social and community safety net in our county. For decades, your library has been helping families get children ready for school by offering thriving kindergarten readiness programs, and this need is now more critical than ever. The library’s role is to enhance and support the work that teachers, caregivers, social workers and so many others are doing to help the children get ready for school. With your support, your library can reach those who cannot get to the library or who do not know what the library can offer them and their families. A literate community is a strong community. Your gift to the library today makes our community stronger by creating readers now and in the future.
