Dear Readers, Editor’s Letter

HEALTH IS MAGAZINE WEALTH

PUBLISHER & EDITOR Diana Lion

March invites renewal — not just in nature, but within ourselves. As we step into a season of growth, this issue of Health is Wealth Magazine explores what it truly means to succeed without losing balance. In “ St. Thomas University: Nurturing Minds, Bodies & Well- Being ,” we highlight how St. Thomas University is redefining higher education through a holistic approach that prioritizes mental health, physical wellness, and academic excellence. It’s a powerful reminder that achievement flourishes when the whole person is supported. We also dive into “ Designing Confidence: Where Business Meets Fashion ,” where creativity and leadership intersect. Through the inspiring journey of Professor Jo Varela — whose training at Istituto Marangoni helped shape her global perspective — we explore how fashion becomes a vehicle for empowerment, strategy, and purpose. And in “ The Hidden Price of Chasing Success, ” we confront a question many silently carry: What is the cost of ambition when balance is lost? In a culture that glorifies exhaustion, we challenge the narrative and advocate for sustainable success rooted in well-being.

In an era where holistic health and well- being are increasingly intertwined with success and fulfillment, St. Thomas University stands out as a dynamic institution that doesn’t just educate — it prioritizes the whole person. Located in Miami Gardens, Florida, St. Thomas University blends rigorous academics with an unwavering commitment to student health, wellness, and life balance. St. Thomas University: Nurturing Minds, Bodies & Well- Being A Mission Rooted in Whole-Person Care At the heart of St. Thomas University’s mission is the belief that academic achievement thrives when students are mentally, physically, and emotionally supported. This philosophy underpins the University’s Health & Wellness Center , which provides students with free, campus-based medical and mental health services, counseling, and personalized wellness support. Rather than treating health needs separately, the Center fosters an integrated approach that respects every student as an individual — not a number. Such holistic care reflects a broader movement in higher education: recognizing that well- being extends beyond the classroom and into students’ lives, helping them build resilience, balance, and purpose.

Nutrition & Lifestyle

While St. Thomas offers a broad range of academic programs, it particularly shines in areas related to health, fitness, and human performance — fields that align naturally with Health is Wealth’s focus on wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle. Academic Excellence with a Wellness Focus One standout example is the Master of Science in Applied Kinesiology . This graduate degree merges the science of human movement with real-world applications in sport, fitness, and rehabilitation. Students engage in advanced coursework in biomechanics, exercise physiology, and motor learning while gaining hands-on experience using lab technologies such as motion analysis and VO ₂ max testing. Graduates are prepared for careers in strength and conditioning, athletic coaching, clinical exercise physiology, and wellness leadership. For undergraduates interested in careers that intersect with health, fitness, and preventative care, the Bachelor of Science in Health Science offers a strong

HEALTH IS WEALTH MAGAZINE

The emphasis on healthy living at St. Thomas doesn’t stop with degrees and labs. University initiatives cultivate lifestyles that encourage fitness, nutrition, and community well-being — key themes for readers who value living well. Programs inspired by national health movements, such as Exercise is Medicine, help students, faculty, and staff incorporate physical activity into daily life. Events like Tommie Training provide guided workouts and professional coaching, strengthening not just bodies but community connections. foundation in exercise science, anatomy, strength and conditioning, and health administration. Specialized tracks connect students to careers in medical professions, athletic training, or hospital- based wellness roles — all areas at the forefront of today’s wellness economy. Beyond the Classroom: Well-Being in Everyday Life Moreover, St. Thomas offers comprehensive health promotion services that support students in building lifelong wellness habits. Workshops on nutrition, sleep and stress management, and preventative care equip students with tools to make informed, healthy choices. The Center for Well-Being integrates health services with counseling and resilience programming — underscoring the belief that emotional and physical wellness go hand-in- hand. A Community That Cares What truly sets St. Thomas University apart is its community-focused approach . In a world where students often feel anonymous on large campuses, St. Thomas’s smaller environment fosters strong relationships, personalized guidance, and a sense of belonging. This supportive atmosphere — combined with health-centered resources — helps students thrive not just academically, but personally and socially as well.

Why It Matters Now In a culture increasingly aware that health truly is wealth, St. Thomas University offers an educational experience that empowers students with not only academic credentials, but also the tools, habits, and community support essential for lifelong wellness. Whether graduates pursue careers in healthcare, fitness, public health, or beyond, they leave equipped with knowledge, resilience, and a balanced perspective on what it means to live well. From accessible medical care to mental health counseling and wellness coaching, every aspect of student life is informed by a deep commitment to human dignity and flourishing. It’s an approach that embraces the full spectrum of well-being — body, mind, and spirit. For today’s generation navigating complex demands on health, time, and happiness, an education that honors both intellectual growth and personal well-being isn’t just valuable — it’s transformative.

Mother’s Month Special Features

There are moments in life when you realize no one is coming to save you. That the version of love, comfort, or tenderness you once needed won’t come from outside. And then something powerful happens: a new version of yourself is born—one capable of holding space for you. One who learns to care for herself, embrace her wounds, and guide herself with compassion. That moment is true emotional maturity: when you become the mother you needed. When You Become the Mother You Needed

The Wound of Being a Child Without an Emotional Mother Many people grew up with a physically present mother but emotionally absent. Cold mothers. Very young and lost mothers. Demanding or dependent mothers. Mothers who did their best but didn’t know how to love without hurting. That child you were may never have had soft guidance or comfort during hard moments. And today, even as an adult, that wound stays open unless you face it. The Impact of Not Being Emotionally Held When you didn’t receive emotional support in childhood, you grow up seeking outside what your mother couldn’t give: Relationships where you hope to be rescued. Jobs where you crave validation. Constant self-pressure to make up for the lack of love. And the harshest part: that inner voice that criticizes without mercy… is a copy of the mother who didn’t know how to speak with love.

The Decision to Mother Yourself Becoming the mother you needed doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a deep, brave decision that says: “I’m done punishing myself for what I didn’t receive. Today I choose to care for myself the way I deserve.” It means committing to yourself like never before:

Page 10

Speaking to yourself with kindness. Resting when you need it. Celebrating yourself, even when no one else does. Setting boundaries where you once stayed silent. It’s treating your inner child with the love she longed for. Signs You're Starting to Mother Yourself Here are signs that you’re already on this path: You eat well not out of guilt, but out of respect. You let yourself cry without feeling weak. You allow yourself to fail without harshness. You talk kindly to yourself when going through something hard. You stop judging your emotions and start listening to them. You are learning to become your own safe place. Healing Doesn't Mean Forgetting What Your Mother Wasn't It’s not about denying your story or romanticizing pain. It’s about owning your power today. About giving yourself what you didn’t receive—without waiting for it to come from outside. And if it still hurts, that’s okay. Honoring your sadness is also mothering. Being your inner mother means saying: “What happened hurt, but I’m here for me now.”

How to Begin Mothering Yourself Consciously Write a letter to your inner child Tell her what no one ever did. Speak with love. Let her know she’s no longer alone. Observe your inner dialogue Do you speak to yourself with judgment or compassion? Each time you criticize yourself, replace it with a comforting voice. Create sacred self-care rituals From cooking with love to resting without guilt. Don’t wait for permission from others. The True Power Lies in Conscious Mothering The woman who chooses to be her own mother: Stops begging for love. Chooses reciprocal relationships. Builds a life with more peace. Breaks the pattern of inner abandonment. It’s not about perfection. It’s about presence, tenderness, and self-respect. This Mother’s Month, beyond flowers and sweet messages, give yourself a deeper gift: Become the mother your soul always needed. Care for yourself. Love yourself. Protect yourself. Listen to yourself.

Entrepreneurship & Resilience

A Chef’s Journey of Resilience and Passion

The Taste of Home, The Pain of Leaving

For many, food is simply sustenance. But for Chef José Luis Chávez, food is a bridge between the past and present, between longing and belonging. Born in Venezuela, with roots deeply intertwined with Peruvian flavors, his journey to culinary mastery wasn’t just about perfecting dishes—it was about rediscovering himself. Like many immigrants, leaving home wasn’t just about seeking opportunity. It was about the quiet ache of missing family, the nostalgia that sneaks up with familiar scents, and the endless pursuit of recreating the comfort of childhood meals in a foreign land. When Passion is Born from Pain Before Mission Ceviche became a celebrated culinary experience, there was a young boy watching his family cook, absorbing traditions like secrets whispered through the generations. But following one’s passion is never easy—especially when the world tells you to play it safe. The road to success was paved with moments of doubt, financial struggles, and the loneliness that often shadows dreamers. Many don’t talk about the sacrifices—the sleepless Ceviche, the dish at the heart of his success, isn’t just about fresh fish and citrus. It’s a metaphor for transformation. The acid of the lime changes the fish, just as life’s hardships shape a person. Too much bitterness, and the dish is ruined. Too little, and it lacks depth. Page 14 nights, the fear of failure, and the internal battle between pursuing one’s passion or settling for stability. But José knew that his love for food was more than just a dream—it was a calling. Ceviche as a Metaphor for Life

Life, like ceviche, requires balance. Chef José Luis Chávez learned that resilience isn’t about avoiding struggles but embracing them—allowing them to refine and not break you. The Reality Behind Success Behind every beautifully plated dish at Mission Ceviche, there’s a story of risk, of believing in a vision when others doubted it. The restaurant industry is relentless—long hours, endless pressure, and the need to constantly innovate. But beyond the business, the real challenge is keeping the essence of home alive in every plate.

HEALTH IS WEALTH MAGAZINE

Finding Healing Through Food But then someone takes a bite of his food, closes their eyes, and smiles. In that moment, he knows the answer. The truth is, success doesn’t erase the struggles of the past. Even as an acclaimed chef, the echoes of his journey remain—the longing for home, the weight of expectations, and the quiet moments when he wonders, “Was it all worth it?” For Chef José, cooking is more than a career; it’s a language of healing. It’s his way of telling stories, of honoring his roots, of sharing a piece of his heart with every dish served. We all carry wounds—some visible, others hidden beneath layers of ambition and responsibility. But sometimes, all it takes is one bite, one taste of something familiar, to remind us that we are never truly alone. More Than Just a Meal Mission Ceviche is more than a restaurant. It’s proof that pain can lead to purpose, that flavors can carry memories, and that success is built not just on talent, but on resilience, sacrifice, and an unwavering belief in oneself.

So the next time you sit down to a meal, take a moment. Think of the hands that prepared it, the stories behind it, and the journeys that brought it to your plate. Because sometimes, food isn’t just food —it’s a piece of someone’s soul, served with love.

The Founding and Growth of Othership From Backyard Sauna to Urban Oasis:

1. Who are the founders and what in their lives caused them to have the vision of Othership? There are five of us: me, my wife Emily Bent, and our co-founders and best friends Amanda Laine, Harrison Taylor, and Myles Farmer. We started Othership based on a mutual interest in developing healthier communities. My wife Emily introduced me to the practice of saunas and cold plunges at the beginning of my sobriety journey in 2017. We both found these experiences so impactful that we did it across our travels together for four years, even bringing groups along instead of going to a bar for drinks. Amanda and Harry had also traveled and experienced different sauna techniques as well, and Myles had worked in hospitality for years. pandemic has blossomed into Othership, a revolutionary wellness venture. Founded by Emily Bent and her co-founders—Amanda Laine, Harrison Taylor, Myles Farmer, and the author—Othership emerged from a shared desire to enhance emotional well-being and community connection. This article delves into the origins, rapid growth, and future plans of Othership, highlighting how a simple, impactful idea has evolved into a transformative experience. ice bath in Toronto during the W hat started as a backyard sauna and

At the height of the COVID pandemic, the five of us decided to build an ice bath in my backyard in Toronto. Every night, one of us would work and host a guided ice bath with a fire. And every day, you could just come and use it for free. If you knew where it was, you could just let yourself in. There was a neighbourhood Whatsapp group that grew to 300 people. We added a sauna and began to integrate emotional wellness programming and classes. We discovered that the combination of hot and cold immersion acted as a powerful social tool, breaking down barriers and fostering connection. This became the basis for Othership.

Page 18

2. From vision to opening, how many years/months passed and what were some of the biggest challenges in transitioning from vision to opening? It all happened very quickly. We signed a lease during lockdown and the Adelaide location launched February 2022. Initially, people thought we were nuts, but we knew from the garage how strong the experience was. We knew it would be helpful to people struggling with loneliness and stress, and to help people connect with themselves and one another in new ways. So we took the risk. Expansion happened quickly as well, bringing challenges with it. Building out locations— especially in different regulatory environments— has had a steep learning curve, as has designing and training for our classes. Our goal is making sure they stay authentic and inspire emotional transformation..

5. Where else do you plan on opening locations? We're trying to expand in New York specifically at the moment, and then move on to build opening teams and expand across the Northeast (Boston, Washington, Chicago, and Philadelphia are all on our radar) and then larger markets like Texas, Florida, and California. 6. Is franchising part of the growth plan? Not at the moment. Business priorities over the next year include scaling the team, raising more funding to build out a number of new units in New York, and building an opening team to start opening new markets as well. 7. Other than Canada and the United States, are there other countries you are considering? The plan is really to expand aggressively across the US. We believe that this can work in any city where people are struggling and stressed and will be a great option in all urban environments. We want to create community in other urban environments to make people feel less lonely and to give them a new place to connect.

3. What were/are the target demographics targeted? Othership is a space for all: those who thrive in their busy work life and want to take care of their emotional and physical health, those looking for a community for social well-being, fitness enthusiasts who undergo physical stress and are looking for a place to recover, and all human beings that want to feel better. 4. How many locations currently exist? We currently have three: two thriving locations in Toronto, and our recently-opened Ship in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. We’ve broken ground on a second New York location, which will open in Williamsburg in 2025.

Othership Manhattan The Art of Recovery in the Modern Age In the bustling metropolis of New York City, finding a haven of tranquility may seem like an impossible task. However, Othership Manhattan has managed to create a unique space where people can disconnect from external noise and reconnect with their inner well-being. This innovative wellness center combines ice baths, hot saunas, and essential oils to provide an immersive experience that goes beyond physical relaxation. This article explores how Othership is revolutionizing the concept of recovery in the modern age.

The Evolution of Recover

Recovery has evolved significantly in recent years. It's no longer just about resting after a long workday or an intense workout session. Modern recovery involves a holistic approach that encompasses the body, mind, and spirit. Othership Manhattan understands this need and has designed a space that blends traditional wellness techniques with innovative practices to offer a transformative experience. One of Othership's cornerstones is contrast therapy, which involves alternating between ice baths and hot saunas. This technique, used for centuries in various cultures, has proven health benefits. The cold helps reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and stimulate the immune system, while the heat from the sauna promotes detoxification and muscle relaxation. By combining these techniques, Othership enables clients to experience complete and deep recovery. Sensory Experience and Mental Health What truly sets Othership apart is its focus on sensory experience. Each session is designed to immerse clients in an environment of tranquility and peace.

Page 20

Client Testimonials and Impact

In an era where wellness has become a priority, Othership Manhattan has distinguished itself with its comprehensive and personalized approach. Clients ranging from stressed executives to high- performance athletes praise the positive impact of the sessions on their overall well-being. “It’s like a reset for the body and mind,” comments a regular client. Others highlight how the combination of physical and mental techniques has better equipped them to face daily challenges. Othership Manhattan is more than just a wellness center; it is a sanctuary where individuals can disconnect from the external world and reconnect with themselves. Through a combination of physical therapies, healing aromas, and conscious breathing practices, Othership offers a recovery experience that goes beyond the traditional. In a world where stress and anxiety are constant, this innovative approach provides an effective way to restore physical and emotional balance. Ultimately, Othership Manhattan is revolutionizing the way people perceive wellness, offering a complete sensory experience that allows for true reconnection with oneself.

Essential oils play a crucial role in this process, as their aromatic properties help calm the mind and balance emotions. From lavender for relaxation to eucalyptus for mental clarity, each scent is carefully selected to enhance the benefits of the therapy. In addition to physical benefits, Othership also emphasizes mental health. During sessions, clients are guided through conscious breathing exercises that allow them to disconnect from daily stress and focus on the present. Conscious breathing not only helps reduce anxiety but also improves the body's ability to recover and renew itself. At the end of each session, clients feel not only physically revitalized but also emotionally balanced.

At St. Thomas University in Miami, creativity meets strategy in a powerful way. Under the umbrella of the Business School, fashion education is not just about aesthetics—it is about leadership, industry readiness, and real-world application. One of the women shaping this vision is Professor Jo Varela, a designer whose journey blends entrepreneurship, craftsmanship, and purpose. Where Business Meets Fashion at St. Thomas University Designing Confidence: Jo Varela’s path into fashion was anything but linear. She began in business school, earning her first degree in business before pursuing her passion for fashion. She later completed her master’s degree at Istituto Marangoni, one of the world’s most prestigious fashion institutions. This combination of business acumen and high-level fashion training laid the foundation for a career that now spans more than two decades. Her brand focuses exclusively on dresses for women. The inspiration behind this decision is rooted in both research and empathy. Studies show that the average woman spends approximately 16 minutes each day deciding what to wear. Over the course of a year, that adds up to nearly 90 hours spent in front of a closet. Jo saw this as an opportunity to simplify women’s lives. “If I can create one garment that a woman can simply take, put on, and feel ready to go, then I’m giving her back time and confidence,” she explains. The dress, in her vision, becomes more than clothing—it becomes a solution. It eliminates decision fatigue and empowers women to step into their day with clarity and ease. For over 20 years, Jo has led her own fashion brand, specializing primarily in the design and manufacturing of uniforms for flight attendants. This niche has allowed her to gain extensive experience not only in design but also in large- scale production, fit precision, and functionality— key elements in professional apparel. Yet beyond uniforms, her personal brand holds a special place in her heart.

Business & Creative Leadership

In the classroom, her mission is clear: prepare students for the real world. She teaches Apparel Development, where students learn how to properly take body measurements and translate those measurements into patterns—the foundation of garment construction. Rather than focusing solely on trends, she emphasizes technical mastery.

This philosophy comes to life beyond the classroom as well. This Thursday, Jo is hosting a runway event that showcases collaboration across different academic levels. She paired Apparel Development I students with Apparel Development III students— bringing together freshmen and seniors to work as creative teams. Each team was assigned an iconic designer as inspiration, including legendary fashion houses such as Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent. The younger students are responsible for constructing skirts, while the more advanced students are designing blazers. Together, they must create a cohesive look that reflects the essence of their assigned designer. Awards will be given in three categories: Best Skirt, Best Blazer, and Best Overall Designer Interpretation. The runway is more than a fashion show—it is a live demonstration of teamwork, mentorship, creativity, and applied technical skill. By blending foundational craftsmanship with business insight and collaborative experience, Jo Varela is shaping more than garments—she is shaping leaders. At the intersection of business and fashion, confidence becomes wearable. And at St. Thomas University, students are learning that true design is not just about what we wear—it’s about how we build, lead, and innovate in a constantly evolving world.

“When students leave campus, I want them to be able to create whatever they envision,” she says. “If they know how to measure correctly and construct a garment properly, they have the essential tools to survive in the fashion industry.” The fashion world is known for its rapid pace and constant evolution. Trends change overnight, technologies advance, and consumer demands shift quickly. Jo believes that by grounding students in technical fundamentals—pattern- making, construction, precision—she is building ethical leaders who can adapt and thrive regardless of industry changes. Her goal is not just to produce designers, but industry-ready professionals who understand standards, quality control, and accountability. By integrating business principles into fashion education, students gain a realistic understanding of production costs, branding, market positioning, and sustainability.

But what happens when your desire to succeed turns into an obsession, making you lose balance in other areas of your life? 📢 We live in a world that glorifies extreme sacrifice. Phrases like “No pain, no gain” and “While they sleep, you work” are repeated like mantras. But what happens when you sacrifice so much that you end up losing yourself? In this article, we’ll explore the true cost of success and how you can achieve it without losing your emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. ✔ Spirituality and inner connection: Focusing entirely on external achievements and validation from others. 🚨 Does this sound familiar? Because success at any cost is never true success. 📌 The most common mistake is believing that achieving your goals will make you happy on its own. ✔ When you sacrifice everything for success, you will always want more. It’s never enough. ✔ The internal emptiness cannot be filled with external achievements. ✔ Success without balance becomes more of a burden than a source of fulfillment. 💡 The problem is not pursuing success, but how you pursue it. Why Chasing Success This Way Will Never Fulfill You 📢 Balance is key. But finding it requires awareness, self-knowledge, and new strategies. How to Achieve Your Goals Without Losing Yourself in the Process

✔ Create a schedule that includes breaks, exercise, social time, and personal enjoyment. 🔹 3. Take Care of Your Mental and Emotional Health: ✔ Identify your limiting beliefs and work on them using techniques like NLP. ✔ Don’t punish yourself for not progressing as fast as you’d like. Accept pauses as moments of reflection and growth. 🔹 4. Surround Yourself with Supportive and Understanding People: ✔ It’s not just about professional contacts, but about authentic relationships that help you grow and stay grounded. 🔹 5. Mindset & Money

Money Without a Soul:

Why You Never Feel Satisfied Despite Your Financial Achievements

In a world obsessed with financial success, it may seem like money is the answer to all problems. But why do so many people who achieve wealth still feel empty, unsatisfied, or even miserable? Money is a powerful resource, but it has no soul. If your well- being and happiness depend solely on how much you earn, it will never be enough. In this article, we will explore why money alone will never be sufficient and how you can develop a healthier relationship with wealth.

The Illusion of Financial Happiness

The problem is not money itself, but the relationship you have with it. 🔹 The endless cycle of ambition: ✔ When you achieve a financial goal, you quickly set a higher one. ✔ You adapt to your success and always want more. ✔ This creates an endless cycle where money never fills the emotional void. Why Money Is Never Enough 🔹 Constant comparison: ✔ Society teaches us to measure our worth by comparing ourselves to others. ✔ Social media, mainstream media, and popular culture reinforce the idea that “more” is always better. ✔ When your self-worth is based on comparison, you will never feel satisfied.

We’ve been sold the idea that money is everything. From a young age, we are taught that success is measured in economic terms:

✔ Owning a big house. ✔ Driving a luxury car. ✔ Wearing designer clothes. ✔ Traveling the world.

📌 The problem: When you base your self-worth on financial achievements, you become dependent on external approval and material validation. Every time you reach a new financial milestone, the desire for more remains. It never feels like enough because there will always be someone more successful, wealthier, or more recognized. Money can buy comfort, but it cannot buy inner peace or true satisfaction.

Page 34

🔹 2. Practice gratitude:

✔ Learn to appreciate what you already have. ✔ Every time you receive money, be grateful and use it consciously.

🔹 3. Change your internal dialogue about money:

✔ Instead of focusing on what you lack, think about what you can create with what you already have. ✔ Shift from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance.

🔹 4. Find balance:

🔹 Lack of authentic purpose:

✔ Financial success should be a means, not an end. ✔ Balance your life with meaningful experiences, authentic relationships, and personal growth.

The problem is that no financial achievement can fill an emotional void. ✔ Compensate for insecurities: Believing that financial success will validate our self- worth. ✔ Escape emotional pain: Using work as a distraction from internal struggles. ✔ Gain external approval: Trying to prove our value to others. ✔ If you work only for money, you lose sight of what truly matters. ✔ When there is no purpose beyond accumulating wealth, money becomes an empty goal. It’s not about how much you earn, but how you perceive what you earn. The Emotional Pain Behind the Pursuit of Wealth How to Build a Healthy Relationship with Money 📢 Money is not bad. The problem arises when you use it to fill gaps it was never meant to fill. ✔ Money becomes a mask that hides deep wounds that need healing. ✔ This is why many wealthy individuals still feel empty, even after achieving everything they dreamed of. 📢 What are you trying to fill with money? Many of us seek wealth as a way to: 🔹 1. Define your purpose: ✔ Ask yourself: Why do I really want money? What do I hope to achieve with it? ✔ Identify whether your goals align with your values or if you’re just chasing external validation.

🔹 5. Heal your emotional wounds:

✔ Use tools like NLP and meditation to identify and transform limiting beliefs about money. ✔ Recognize your emotional traumas and work on them to prevent them from influencing your relationship with wealth. 🔥 Ana, 37 years old: “I thought that reaching my first million would make me feel complete. But the truth is, I only felt emptier. It wasn’t until I learned to value my journey, not just the results, that I truly found peace.” Testimonials

Conclusion

📢 Money is a great servant but a terrible master. 💡 If you want to live a fulfilling life, you need to learn to see money as a tool for growth and contribution, not as the ultimate goal.
