Similarly, when we look at wastewater — the amount of virus that ends up in our toilets — there are some winter spikes, but the levels never reach zero, even in the summer months. This is true across the province and in our region of southwest Ontario. So, what should we do? Many of the measures employed during the pandemic still hold merit. • If you are sick, avoid exposing others by staying home or wearing a mask for 10 days from symptom onset • If you sneeze or cough, do so into your sleeve or a tissue. Promptly dispose of the tissue and wash your hands • Frequent hand washing or use of alcohol-based hand cleansers will limit the spread • Physical distancing whenever possible is a great idea • And I encourage everyone to spend more time outdoors when possible. If you are in a high-risk group, make sure that your vaccinations are up to date. For example, only 53% of those individuals 80 years and older who are eligible for vaccination have been vaccinated. This cohort is at the highest risk of serious illness and death. COVID is not gone. It is not even seasonal — yet. Take care of yourselves and each other.
In the pharmacy, we are still providing COVID vaccines. Every
person has their reasons for vaccination: • they or someone close to them is at high risk of complications; • travelling and want to make sure they are fully vaccinated; • they are eligible and want to limit the spread. Currently, the Ministry of Health recommends a spring vac- cination if you are: • 65 years and older • living in a long-term care home or other congregate living setting for seniors • moderately to severely immunocompromised • 55 years and older and identify as First Nations, Inuit, Metis or non-Indigenous household member and are aged 55 years and older. For others, the recommendation is to wait until the fall when we will receive further instructions from the Ministry. This may cause some people to believe that COVID has become a seasonal virus, like influenza. Sadly, this is not true. While the results of provincial trackers suggest low circulation of common
