What did you do while on the vacation scheme? I sat in the finance department for two weeks, where I experienced a variety of live work given to me by my supervisor in the maritime team, other associates and trainees. Matters included the transfer of a loan and reviewing the terms of a contract. I’m currently a paralegal at a different firm, so it was particularly good to be working on real matters alongside the team. There were also lots of opportunities to socialise, from presentations to the more informal Friday drinks trolley. What did you feel that you gained from the placement? A great insight into one of the firm’s key work areas – shipping finance, which is a specialism that really interests me. Which were the most enjoyable - and most challenging - aspects of the scheme? I enjoyed the whole scheme but the social events stand out because I was able to meet new people from across the firm that I wouldn’t have the opportunity to through the work alone. That helped me gain more insights into the firm, such as the travel opportunities involved. The most challenging aspect was trying to show that I was switched on and capable while needing to ask lots of questions! Did the scheme end with a training contract interview or some other kind of further recruitment process? Vacation schemers were asked to prepare a group presentation which we then had to deliver at the end of the two weeks. We were also assessed on how we did in an observed planning meeting, as well as when giving the presentation itself. At the end of the scheme I also had an interview, but it felt like more of a conversation than other interviews I have attended. Is there one key thing that you took away from the experience that you would pass on as advice to others? Get involved as much as you can and ask as many people as possible for work. Engage with everyone – for example, I talked a lot with the secretaries and learned so much in the process.
