The Law Society The Law Society is the independent professional body for solicitors in England and Wales. We are run by and for our members. Our role is to be the voice of solicitors, to drive excellence in the profession and to safeguard the rule of law. On behalf of the profession, we influence the legislative and regulatory environment in the public interest. At home, we promote the profession and the vital role legal services play in our economy. Around the world, we promote England and Wales as a global legal centre, open new markets and defend human rights. Our members are at the heart of everything we do. Whether you are working in a high- street practice, a commercial, regional or City firm, an alternative business structure (ABS) or in-house for a private, public or charitable organisation, the Law Society exists for you. We are committed to ensuring that you can make the most of opportunities and can respond to the challenges of a changing legal sector. We aim to deliver value for money for the public interest funding contribution that you make as part of your practising fee, and when you choose to pay for additional products and services. Supporting students and solicitors We provide a range of services for students, trainees and newly qualified solicitors, including information and training. Our weekly Law Society Gazette includes news, commentary and features on different areas of law. Our website is a comprehensive and regularly updated source of information for the entire profession. Every year we run over 400 national and regional conferences, workshops and seminars, including careers workshops for
undergraduates and LPC students. Once qualified, members can subscribe to a range of networks. Benefits include exclusive access to training events, conferences and seminars, dedicated web areas and web-based forums, newsletters and alerts, practice toolkits and quarterly magazines. As the sole national representative body for all solicitors in England and Wales, we are the voice of the profession, making sure that our members’ views are heard by regulators, government and other decision makers. We campaign for better law, lobby and work with parliamentary members, and challenge the government where necessary. Promoting equality and diversity Our Diversity Access Scheme helps talented, committed people to overcome social, economic or personal barriers to becoming a solicitor. It funds LPC places at a number of teaching institutions and offers mentoring support and work placements. Junior Lawyers Division With approximately 70,000 members, the Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) is one of the largest communities within the Law Society. It represents, supports and provides services to junior lawyers at the start of their careers to help them develop, progress and diversify within the legal profession. Membership of the JLD, which is free and automatic, includes LPC students, LPC graduates such as those working as paralegals, trainee solicitors and solicitors up to five years qualified. A local presence Local JLD groups exist across the country. They run events ranging from lectures to monthly meetings and social events and offer an opportunity to socialise with junior lawyers who work and live in the area. They can often be a lifeline for trainees who may be the only trainee in their firms, as well as
