The firm Bristows is a medium-sized firm that handles the types of work you might normally associate with only the very largest firms. Established 180 years ago, we have built up a client list that includes leading businesses from a variety of cutting-edge industries. Working with so many ambitious organisations, we are often advising on issues that shape entire industries and on which a company’s future might depend. Our strength in the intellectual property field means we have a great many clients from the life sciences, technology and consumer products sectors, as these are areas where organisations often need to protect their ideas, inventions and brands. Our clients range from fast-growing start-ups and medium-sized enterprises, to global corporations, financial institutions and high-profile charities. It’s a real mix of organisations and, whatever your specialism, as a lawyer at Bristows you could find yourself working with any of them. Types of work Bristows has one of the foremost intellectual property practices in the world. Our lawyers are recognised as leading authorities in a wide variety of legal disciplines and as a firm we offer a true breadth of expertise. Our core practice areas are: IP, IT and data protection, corporate, commercial technology and copyright disputes, real estate, regulatory, EU and competition, employment, tax and charities. Who should apply Each year we ask around 10 graduates to join our team and are extremely selective because we are looking for trainees with true partner potential. We place great importance on having a diverse and inclusive environment and recruit trainees from all degree disciplines (including those with a science and engineering background) from a wide range of universities. Training programme As part of a small, select and high-calibre intake, our trainees work alongside our partners dealing directly with clients right from the start. There’s plenty of responsibility, but this is matched by an extremely supportive and friendly culture so trainees are never far from encouragement and advice when they need it. During the two years’ training we offer a mixture of three-month and six-month seats which may include a three-month secondment to the UK in-house legal department of one of our leading multi- national clients. We also guarantee a seat in IP – this is rare even among firms with a strong IP practice! When and how to apply To apply for a training contract position commencing in August 2022, please complete our online application form which can be found on the firm’s trainee recruitment webpage. The deadline for training contract applications is 30 June 2020. Work placements We run a number of two-day workshops and open days which offer the chance to find out more about Bristows and are a great opportunity to assess whether law as a career, and Bristows as a firm, are for you. While in the office you will take part in a range of activities to enable you to get a real sense of the firm and find out first-hand what life is like as a lawyer at Bristows. Please visit our website for the dates of our winter, spring and summer workshops, our open days and application deadlines.
