Who should apply Individuals stimulated by solving business and legal challenges. Academic excellence (minimum 2.1 and at least 320/128 UCAS points or equivalent), great analytical skills and a rigorous approach are essential. You should demonstrate plenty of energy, drive and determination. Your understanding of business and commercial considerations should be of a good standard. You will be adaptable, capable of thinking on your feet and have great communication and interpersonal skills. Understanding teamwork, evidence of leadership and seeking responsibilities are vital. Interesting achievements and making the most of non-academic and work experience (not necessarily all legal) opportunities will help applicants stand-out. Training programme Cooley’s training experience revolves around small groups of trainees and really hands-on involvement. We truly believe in learning by doing. Trainees spend four six-month periods in some of the firm’s contentious and non-contentious corporate/transactional and litigation areas. Trainees give preferences for seats and there may also be opportunities for client secondments from time to time. The focus is on your development as a truly commercial lawyer. Supplementing your hands-on learning will be a programme designed to increase your knowledge and skill for the work Cooley does. You’ll also develop your finance, marketing and commercial understanding. Practice group programmes and firm-wide opportunities will enhance this.
