The firm Mishcon de Reya is an independent law firm, which now employs more than 900 people with over 550 lawyers offering a wide range of legal services to companies and individuals. Based in London with offices in New York, the firm services an international community of clients and provides advice in situations where the constraints of geography often do not apply. The work it undertakes is cross-border, multi-jurisdictional and complex, spanning six core practice areas. Mishcon de Reya has grown rapidly in recent years, showing more than 80% revenue growth in the past five years alone. In 2015, the firm moved into a purpose designed building on Kingsway, and has converted to both an alternative business structure and LLP. Mishcon de Reya prides itself on the diverse range of people who make up the firm. The central role played by the academy, the firm’s in-house place of learning, development and new thinking, and its active and innovative social impact strategy are reflected in its Investors in People Platinum standard. Types of work We work across six practice areas: corporate, employment, dispute resolution, intellectual property, private and real estate law. The firm also has a number of specialist groups including competition, finance and banking, fraud, immigration, international arbitration and art law. Who should apply Applications are welcome from penultimate-year law and final-year non-law undergraduate students as well as other graduates wishing to commence a training contract in two years’ time. The firm recruits from a wide range of universities. Our trainees are typically high-achieving and intelligent individuals with good interpersonal skills and outgoing personalities. Strength of character and ability to think laterally are also important. Training programme Trainees have the opportunity to gain experience, skills and knowledge from across the firm in four six-month seats involving both contentious and non-contentious work. Because of the relatively few training contracts offered, trainees can be exposed to high-quality work with lots of responsibility early on. Trainees are supported with a wide ranging training and development programme in addition to the Professional Skills Course. Trainee performance is monitored closely and trainees can expect to receive regular feedback in addition to mid-seat and end-of-seat appraisals. When and how to apply Applicants should submit an online application for vacation schemes via our trainee recruitment website: www.mishcon.com/graduates. Applications open on 1 October and close 15 January 2020. Applicants will be considered for a training contract once they have completed a vacation scheme. Work placements We run three vacation schemes, one over Easter and two in July. Our schemes have been designed to provide individuals with an insight into the role of a trainee, our culture and our people. As well as being paid on the vacation scheme, those not living within commuting distance of London will be provided with free accommodation. We run a fun vacation scheme with an informative workshop programme covering all practice areas of the firm, combined with individual and group work sessions. Sponsorship Firm provides full LPC and GDL funding, and a maintenance grant of £7,000 payable in the GDL and LPC year.
