Types of work Shoosmiths is a full-service law firm offering you experience in a variety of areas, including commercial, corporate, employment, real estate, intellectual property, banking, planning, and dispute resolution. We also offer private client, personal injury, clinical negligence, conveyancing, and wealth protection. Who should apply You should be open-minded and innovative with a can-do attitude. You’ll be trained in a non-hierarchal, agile, open plan environment. As a trainee, you will value a social life outside the office. Work wise, you will care about the quality of service you give to clients, and will want to make a real and direct contribution to the firm’s success. You’ll need to demonstrate your desire to train to be an expert in law and the ability to work consistently and collaboratively, for the benefit of you, the firm and your clients. Training programme There is nothing like diving straight in and having a go, we expect you to relish the opportunity to get experience of real cases and deals from the start. In our opinion, it is the best way to learn. We allocate no more than one trainee to each team, which means trainees enjoy high levels of involvement with the team, and are given good quality work and contact with clients. Over two years, you will complete four six-month placements, one of which could be an external secondment to a client’s in-house legal team, providing an invaluable insight from the client’s perspective. Secondments are seen as a valuable opportunity for relationship building with clients and to help the personal development of our solicitors and trainees. Our trainees take an active part in corporate responsibility from their very first week and develop their personal brand profile and written communication style by contributing to the Shoosmiths careers blog and social media. Work placements We offer placements of one week to help you get a real insight into the life of a trainee. You will get early exposure to clients and case files, and will be supported by an expert solicitor. Placements provide invaluable experience, allowing you to choose the right firm for you, and can even fast track you to a place on the assessment day for a training contract. Sponsorship We are happy to offer you financial assistance in relation to your forthcoming GDL and/or LPC (or equivalent). We do not specify a particular provider for your postgraduate studies.
