Clients include solicitors, local government, central government, corporate bodies and individuals. Tenants practise in all areas of work for the first three years after recruitment, which provides enviable advocacy experience and develops an interesting and varied practice. Areas of work Members of chambers work and specialise in a wide variety of areas. The largest group in chambers practises in personal injury and clinical negligence work and its members are ranked in the leading Bar directories. Members of chambers also represent parties at inquests. There is a strong criminal team with work in fraud, sexual offences and general crime, and a growing regulatory team working with professional bodies and individuals. 9 Gough Square has long been known for its police work, accepting instructions from the Metropolitan Police and other constabularies in a variety of civil and quasi-criminal cases. The family team undertakes public and private law work, regularly appearing in High Court and Court of Appeal cases. Court of Protection work permits cross-over between the family and civil disciplines. The commercial and property team is routinely involved in cases of all levels of complexity, acting for businesses, creditors, debtors, landlords and other individuals. Its members cover the full spectrum of disputes from cases relating to commercial leases and construction contracts to consumer credit and insolvency matters. As a common law set, members of chambers, and particularly junior tenants, frequently encounter and tackle a wide variety of other areas of work, including employment, public and costs work. Who should apply We look for highly-motivated candidates of proven intellectual ability, usually evidenced by at least a 2.1 degree or equivalent, who can also demonstrate a commitment to the Bar and a flair for advocacy, combined with common sense and sound judgement. 9 Gough Square operates and observes a robust equality and diversity policy. For many years we have been at the forefront of E&D issues at the Bar. Pupillage programme We offer up to two pupillages of 12 months’ duration. All pupillages are funded.
