What did you do while on the vacation scheme? I sat in the Competition, Public and EU Law and Financial Services Litigation departments during my scheme and did mainly research and drafting work. For example, in public law, I helped research the content for the firm’s daily internal Brexit updates, and in financial services disputes, I drafted a response to another solicitors’ firm representing a potential adversary to our client. In addition to work in the departments, there was a group presentation task that involved finding a current Hogan Lovells’ client and pitching a new practice area that the firm could provide the client. My group chose to pitch the financing practice area to a major Chinese telecommunications and media company. I found the exercise to be a great way to learn more about the firm and its clients. We were able to network with partners and trainees at lunches and social events, and I also reached out to other lawyers and went for coffee to hear about their life experiences in a less formal setting. What did you feel that you gained from the placement? I gained a real insight into the firm: how it’s organised, how the different departments collaborate and how trainees work alongside associates and partners. It’s almost impossible to tell the culture of a firm from the outside, so it was great to meet a diverse range of people who were all friendly and intellectually curious. I also gained an insight into the typical tasks a trainee might do and the hands-on nature of the job. A big benefit was deepening my general knowledge about the industry and world of commercial law through my work and the presentations. Which were the most enjoyable – and most challenging – aspects of the scheme? I thoroughly enjoyed trying the types of activities a solicitor does and getting a first-hand look at what working in a big international law firm is like. I felt like people in my team really valued having me there and wanted to give me opportunities to help them. Of course, time management can be challenging as you want to show eagerness and initiative without taking on too much. Did the scheme end with a training contract interview or some other kind of further recruitment process? There was an interview at the end of the scheme, and I found out soon afterwards that I had secured a training contract. Is there one key thing that you took away from the experience that you would pass on as advice to others? It’s important to manage your time wisely and demonstrate that you can prioritise your commitments. There’s only so much time within a scheme so don’t take on more than you can handle and make sure you deliver on what you’ve committed to. Ultimately, it’s about striking the right balance between showing you can do the work to a high standard and that you are genuinely interested in the work and would be a good fit for the firm. You can do that by being proactive in learning about the firm’s work and asking questions.
