Q. What does it take to work most effectively as a youth sponsor? A. Here are some of the basic quali fications : 1. Salvation and a sterling Chris tian life are foremost among the requisites. You cannot lead the young people where you have not been yourself. 2. A sympathetic understanding of and love for young people. You should be able to under stand the problems, and points of view, and their needs, con flicts, aspirations, and heart aches. Be interested in them for what they are and for what they can become. 3. Spiritual and emotional matu rity. You must be ahead of your youth, able to lead them on, but not so far beyond them that they lag behind. 4. Available time and the ca pacity for hard work. Youth work takes time! The ability to sacrifice personal interests for the sake of teen-agers is a basic requirement in youth work. 5. Ability to befriend and coun sel young people. Sponsoring involves not only understand ing and loving young people but also includes the ability to help them in their problems. Q. What should be the main pur pose of the Sunday evening youth group? A. Above all, the Sunday evening youth program should be a training program—to train young people in Christian living and Christian lead ership. This can be accomplished through creative expression, mean ingful participation, and assigned leadership r e s p o n s ib ilit y . Young people need training and practical guidance in the many phases and problem areas of the Christian life, such as those faced in home life, personal life, school life, social life, and church life. The youth program
