Rhinoplasty or "nose job" is a surgical procedure performed to reshape and improve the appearance of the nose. In 2020 rhinoplasty was the number one cosmetic surgery performed in the United States. * Common complaints leading patients to seek rhinoplasty surgery include a nose that appears too large, a bump on the bridge of the nose, a crooked nose, a nasal tip that appears too big or bulbous, and trouble breathing through the nose. More so than most other surgical procedures, aesthetic nasal surgery must be customized to the individual. A detailed analysis of not only the internal and external nose but the entire face must be performed to understand what structures require alteration to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing nose that remains functional and proportional to the existing facial structures. Rhinoplasty surgery involves a small incision across the columella of the nose that extends inside the nostrils.
For those patients who may not be ready to commit to rhinoplasty surgery or don't have the downtime necessary for recovery, a less invasive alternative may be an option — Liquid Rhinoplasty . This procedure involves the injection of dermal fillers into the nose to reshape it and is a great option for patients with isolated deformities of the nasal bridge or nasal tip. It may also be an option for patients who have had a rhinoplasty in the past and have minor irregularities postoperatively. Lastly, liquid rhinoplasty can be a great way to "test out" your new nose before committing to a more permanent surgical rhinoplasty.
This incision allows the surgeon access to the underlying cartilaginous framework that gives the nose its external appearance. Traditional rhinoplasty operations were reductive in nature, focusing on making the nose smaller and more "refined". This often led to a weakening of the supporting structures of the nose and deformity, sometimes years after the operation. Using newer, more modern techniques, we are now able to refine the external appearance of the nose without sacrificing its underlying support. The best candidate for rhinoplasty is a healthy patient who has attributes to their nose they wish to change. In facial aesthetics we discuss facial proportions all the time and keeping proportions symmetric will yield the best result. A patient whose nasal features are out of proportion to the rest of their face is a good candidate because we can reduce the size of the nose to improve facial proportions. Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia in our outpatient surgery center. Postoperatively, it is important for patients to keep their head elevated, especially while sleeping to minimize swelling. Swelling peaks 2-3 days after surgery but decreases thereafter. A cast is placed on the nose and splints are placed inside the nostrils for 5-7 days after the operation to protect your new nose.
