NON-SURGICAL

UP

Tighten it BY KATY JO GROFT, CLINICAL AESTHETICIAN

Of all concerns I treat in our practice, skin tightening is by far one that I am highly passionate about, as many of our patients struggle with laxity and loss of volume as we age. These patients range in age from 20’s and beyond. While some patients may be looking for preventative treatments, others are looking for corrective procedures for more severe laxity concerns. We offer a variety of treatment options for patients who are seeking non-surgical skin tightening from head to toe.

So, what causes laxity in the skin?

Collagen production starts to decline around the age of 25, decreasing around 1-2% per year afterward. Collagen is the main structural protein found in the skin and other connective tissues throughout the body. Think of collagen as the foundation of our skin, like you would the foundation of a house. As the foundation ages, it begins to settle and weaken over time. Just like collagen, the elastin in our skin will decrease as we age. Elastin is a protein that your body naturally produces, stretching like a rubber band. Elastin coils and recoils like a spring within the elastic fibers of connective tissue. Additionally, many other lifestyle factors may contribute to the loss of collagen and elastin in the skin; free radicals, toxins, pollutants, and UV exposure are all among these contributing factors.

Our first line of defense starts with good, physician-directed skin care, no matter what our age is. Daily topical antioxidants like SkinCeuticals ® CE Ferulic can help to neutralize free radicals that break down collagen and elastin in our skin and should always be paired with a daily broad-spectrum SPF like Revision Skincare ® Intellishade ® . Regular use of retinol can also be a beneficial tool, as they increase cell turnover, promoting collagen

and elastin production. In addition, hyaluronic acid, a jelly-like substance found naturally within our skin that provides bounce and suppleness that work support to collagen and elastin proteins found within the skin and may also be applied topically to help restore hydration. Try SkinCeuticals HA Intensifier to restore hyaluronic acid in the skin.
