A Fascinating Look at How People Really Lived A REVIEW OF ‘IF WALLS COULD TALK’
There are four main rooms in a typical, standard home: the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living room. For the most part, in today’s world, we all carry out the same business in these different rooms. Our bedrooms are for sleeping, relaxing, getting dressed, or winding down from a long day before bed. Our bathrooms are where we shower, use the facilities, apply makeup, shave, brush our teeth, and practice other normal hygiene routines. In the kitchen, we cook, eat, and socialize. Lastly, in the living room, we entertain guests, watch television, and recline in a comfy sofa or chair and relax. However, many years ago, these rooms that we know so well today didn’t exactly serve the same purpose. In Lucy Worsley’s “If Walls Could Talk: The History of the Home,” which also accompanies a BBC4 TV series, she delves into how our houses literally went from brick and mortar to home sweet home. For example, in medieval times, sleeping wasn’t a private affair; it was common to share a bedroom and even a bed with your entire family. In fact, some people even slept sitting up! In the bathroom, toilets didn’t flush until much later after their creation, and they were separated for many years due to different hygiene routines. In the kitchen, wealthy
to be both whimsical and educational. Not only did it discuss how different domestic life once was, but it also gave a glimpse into how the language has changed surrounding the items we use in our houses. Where we keep our clothes today isn’t where they were kept many years ago! It certainly is a different read than my normal go-to book, but that’s what made it all the more interesting. From cover to cover, it was a great walkthrough of the daily lives of people who came before us.
people were even afraid of fruit, and the living room didn’t come to be until people actually had the free time to relax and enjoy it. It’s a fascinating book written in a fun style that I found

Especially if you enjoy watching Lucy Worsley on BBC or PBS, you’re sure to enjoy “If Walls Could Talk.” It’s light and concise enough that it can be read in just a few sittings and is sure to give you a few chuckles as it delves into the history of every corner of your home. A Mindful Space CREATING A MENTAL HEALTH SANCTUARY IN YOUR HOME
GET RID OF DISTRACTIONS. Social media,
According to the National Institute of Mental Health Disorders, an estimated 26% of Americans over the age of 18 suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder. With increases in the cost of living, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rising tensions in Eastern Europe, that percentage could increase even more throughout the next few years. If you’re someone who struggles with mental health, you’ve probably tried all of the traditional methods to improve your situation, but have you made any adjustments to your actual home? If you’re unsure where to begin, try out these tips. GIVE EACH ROOM PURPOSE. One of the biggest interior design mistakes you can make is using a room for more than one thing. This is even more important if you work remotely. Each room should have a dedicated purpose. If you work from home, your office should not be in your bedroom or even in the area where you exercise. Plan out every bit of space that you have and add personal touches to it to remind you of what’s really important in your life.
mainstream news, and cellphones as a whole can have disastrous effects on your mental health. When you’re in your home, try
to minimize your use of these technologies. If you’re not using the television, keep it off. Also, try to keep your home as clean as possible because clutter and dirt can easily bring you down. USE NATURAL LIGHT AND CALMING COLORS. When designing your living space, try to incorporate as much natural light as possible. Regular exposure to sunlight gives you more energy, makes you happier, and even improves your appetite. If you’re painting, avoid any loud colors and use calming neutrals instead. Adding the right colors, natural light, and some plants will help create an aesthetic that will boost your mental health.
WE’VE GOT THE LEGAL MATTERS COVERED Focus on Healing
In criminal defense and personal injury cases, there are a few compelling reasons to hire a trial attorney. However, before you do, it’s important to understand what exactly a trial attorney’s role is in both criminal defense and personal injury matters. A trial attorney is experienced in the courtroom and is confident and comfortable making legal arguments and presenting your case before a judge and jury. Their experience is just one of many reasons why they can be so helpful to you and your case. THEY KNOW THE PROCESS INSIDE AND OUT. Whether you’re neck-deep in a criminal defense case or a negligence-related matter, you’re enduring emotional, physical, and financial complications. The very last thing on your mind should be the trial process. Hiring a trial attorney ensures that you don’t need to worry, as they guide you through all of the steps with their expertise and experience. THEY HAVE A GOOD IDEA OF THE OPPOSING PARTY’S NEXT MOVE. In trials, the opposing party is also out to win. Would you be able to go through this process on your own and pursue the right compensation or mediation without legal representation? To receive the
compensation that you deserve or the best possible case outcome, having a trial attorney on your side who knows exactly what you’ll find yourself up against and how to overcome and respond to it is paramount.
THEY OFFER PEACE OF MIND. Knowing that your trial attorney has your best interests at heart is the best feeling. This allows you to focus on your own personal recovery while your attorney takes the huge burden of trial matters off of your plate. From the gathering of evidence and facts, to the preparation, to the execution of the case and trial, your trial attorney has it covered!

Planning for After the Case How to Manage Your Money After an Injury Settlement
HAVE A LAUGH
All of the following steps can help you formulate a plan to protect and manage your personal injury settlement.
ASSESS YOUR MONTHLY EXPENSES AND CREATE A BUDGET. You may think a budget is the last thing you need (after all, you have money now), but you probably need a budget now more than ever, as counterintuitive as it may seem. If you don’t establish a baseline of your income and expenses, it will be far too easy to lose track of the money that is coming in and going out. The act of creating a budget will help you develop discipline in spending. In addition, by distinguishing “needs” from “wants,” creating a budget gives you a clearer picture of how much is left over to meet your larger, long-term goals. REVIEW YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGE. How does your change in circumstances impact your insurance needs? Do you need more insurance? Less insurance? What new assets, if any, do you need to protect? REVIEW YOUR WILL AND OTHER ESTATE PLANNING DOCUMENTS. Do you need to update or revise your will or any related trust documents? If you don’t have a will, now might be an appropriate time to make one and to think about other estate planning matters. GET PROFESSIONAL ADVICE. You can take all of the steps listed above on your own, but if you never have dealt with these types of issues, you may want to consult with one or more experts, including:
This dip tastes great with bread, crostini, or crackers and will be a hit at any summer gathering. Grilled Corn and Ricotta Dip
INGREDIENTS
• • • • • •
6 ears of corn
black pepper, to taste
• • •
An insurance specialist
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
•
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, finely grated 2 tbsp unsalted butter, diced Chives and scallions, finely chopped
An estate planning attorney
A tax professional (e.g., a CPA or tax attorney)
1 1/2 cups ricotta
• •
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
Even though your personal injury settlement is not taxable as income, any income you earn from investing your settlement money likely would be taxable. The wisest course of action is to assume that some portion of your settlement will be subject to taxes at some point and talk to a professional to avoid any unpleasant surprises. HIRE A FINANCIAL ADVISOR. A financial advisor is a professional who understands how money works and can help you make informed financial decisions. A good financial advisor will assess your present situation and offer options to help you maximize the value of your personal injury settlement. However, not all financial advisors are created equal. Some are highly educated, well- trained, and independent; others are glorified salespersons, pushing the products of a particular investment company. Do your research before you choose a financial advisor.
2 tbsp thyme, finely chopped Kosher salt and freshly ground
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat the oven to 325 F.
2. In a large grill pan on high heat, cook the corn until charred on all sides. Let cool, then cut the kernels from the cob. 3. In a food processor or blender, purée two-thirds of the kernels with the cream, ricotta, flour, and thyme. Season with salt and pepper, and stir in remaining whole kernels. 4. Pour into an 8-inch baking dish. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top, and dot with butter. Bake for approximately 1 1/2 hours, until bubbly.
5. Garnish with chives and scallions before serving.

SUMMER SKIN PROTECTION
TIME FOR SAFE SUMMER FUN
3 Ways to Protect Your Skin From the Sun
It’s time for fun in the sun! Whether you’re heading out to the beach or lake, catching a ballgame, hosting a barbecue, or taking a boat tour, it’s important to protect your skin to avoid sun damage. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 Americans develops skin cancer by the time they are 70 years old, and every hour, two people die of skin cancer nationally. The risk of skin cancer is severe — it’s not just one sunburn. Having five or more sunburns in your lifetime can double your risk of developing skin cancer.
Here are some surefire ways to avoid a pesky, painful, and potentially harmful sunburn.
options aren’t available, create your own shade by wearing a hat and toting along an umbrella.
ALWAYS CHECK: DID YOU APPLY (AND REAPPLY) SUNSCREEN? Apply sunscreen, and then reapply after going in the water or a few hours later. According to the National Cancer Institute, only about 30% of women and less than 15% of men regularly apply sunscreen, which leaves them vulnerable to the sun’s harmful UV rays. The National Cancer Institute recommends using an SPF of at least 15 and reminds everyone to remember their feet if they are exposed! SEEK OUT THE SHADE. No matter the activity, try to limit your exposure to the sun — you’ll be cooler, too! Look for trees, pavilions, and shelters. When these
WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING. Whenever possible, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. UV protective clothing is best for maximum protection. Don’t forget about your eyes — UV sunglasses are important for your eyes and the delicate skin around them. Just because sunglasses appear dark does not mean they protect against UV rays! This summer, be sure to have fun but don’t forget to protect your skin from sunburns, possible skin cancer, and early signs of aging due to damage from sun exposure! Lather up!
