Letter PRESIDENT'S

Mark J. Sobeck

Dear fellow Westmoreland Club members, Happy summer, everyone! As I write this, we are just coming out of some record-breaking heat. If you’re looking for someplace cool (in more ways than one), try our new “Cellar 73.” Fine dining at its finest in the privacy of your own wine cellar. I recently had dinner there and it was an amazing experience. The food selections were out of this world, and the wines were delicious. This room gives you complete privacy, surrounded by hundreds of bottles of your favorite wines. It's a very comfortable space to celebrate special occasions or entertain business clients in a very unique setting. Call Matthew to arrange for a special food menu, along with the finest wines of your choosing.

Also, keep an eye out for the details on our new steakhouse theme dining, “1873 Prime.” Some of our dining rooms on the first floor will be specially set up and decorated to have the look and feel of a steakhouse, with the finest cuts of beef available, among other items associated with some of the best restaurants in the country. Stay tuned for more details in the next few weeks. The finishing touches are being put on the new warming kitchen in Grand Hall, so we are now fully prepared to handle some of the biggest and best events in the area. Please keep this remarkable space in mind for weddings, parties, fundraising events, etc. Lastly, I'd like to mention that we are in the early stages of planning the refreshing of several rooms in the clubhouse, starting with the Main Ballroom. More details in the coming months. Looking forward to seeing everyone around the club this summer, especially on our beautiful porch.

As we continue to focus on expanding the menu and improving the quality of service, from cocktails to culinary offerings, we are excited to announce that we will be launching a new dinner menu on Thursday, July 17 . We are revising some classics, adding some new items, and looking to continue to offer a quality th dining experience with all-new cocktail menus and wine by the glass menus.

& Porch

We are in the final stages of adding a new dining option to The Westmoreland Club. This traditional steakhouse will open on the 1 floor of the Club in what is now The Bistro. This st steakhouse will offer premium cuts of beef along with some quality seafood creations and a few specialty items. This location will open with The Main Bar serving as a cocktail lounge with its own unique cocktail menu and light fare menu.

7

In closing, as we continue to refine and perfect our culinary and dining options here at the Club, we have already begun our initial planning for our Winter All Member Event. MEET THE FOUNDERS

George W. Guthrie (1923-2008)

President of the Westmoreland Club in 1969 and 1970.

A lifelong resident and prominent citizen of the Wyoming Valley, George Guthrie Conyngham was the scion of some of the first families of this area. A direct descendant of Colonel Zebulon Butler, he was born in Wilkes-Barre on October 31, 1923, the second son of William Hillard Conyngham (President of the Westmoreland Club 1918-1919) and Jessie Guthrie Conyngham. Beginning his education at the Wilkes-Barre Academy, he continued at Wyoming Seminary before transferring to the Hotchkiss School. Following in the tradition of his father and grandfather, Guthrie, matriculated to Yale University from which he graduated in 1945.

Devoted to his country, he left Yale to enlist in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 20. Serving on the Island of Guam from 1943 to 1945, an honorable ~ discharge was granted for service in World War II. His service continued in the Marine Corps Reserves, from which he was recalled to active duty in Korea. Severely wounded in 1951, after a long recovery, Guthrie was again discharged as a first lieutenant, receiving two Purple Hearts for wounds in combat. Having begun his career with Eastern Pennsylvania Supply Company after World War II, he remained active with W.H. Conyngham & Company, parent of Eastern Penn, Hillside Farms, Hillside Greenhouse and Hayfield Farms until his death. He served actively with the Middle Atlantic Wholesalers Association and the American Supply Association, overseeing its creation by the merger of the Central Supply Association and the American Institute of Suppliers Association. A strong believer in community service, our subject served on and provided distinguished leadership on numerous boards in the Wyoming Valley, including the United Way, Children's Service Center, Wilkes-Barre YMCA, Wyoming Valley Red Cross, Blue Cross of NEPA, Robert Packer Hospital, and VA Medical Center, to mention a few. His veterans affiliations included the Marine Corps League, Korean War Veterans, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Guthrie was also a Mason, a member of Kiwanis, and a life member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. His love of the outdoors and the sport of fishing are manifested by his memberships in the North Mountain Club, the Atlantic Salmon Association, and the Hershey, Veazie and Miramichi Salmon Clubs of Maine. A committed family man, he married Corinne Gregory, a descendant of Peter Gregory, who was among the earliest settlers in Union Township, in July, 1951. Their marriage produced three sons, Donald G., Malcolm G. and George G., Jr. (President of the Westmoreland Club 2016-2017), who continue their father's leadership of W.H. Conyngham & Company, and a daughter, Thamsin C. Bowes, parents of his 11 grandchildren. Corinne passed away in 1981, and Guthrie married Shirley Marquart in 1984, who survives him.

A PIECE OF HISTORY WESTMORELAND CLUB In 2018, The Westmoreland Club Charitable Foundation dedicated The Edward Welles, Jr. Library & Heritage Room at The Westmoreland Club. Members of the Board of Directors of the Foundation and the President and members of the Board of Governors of The Club welcomed representatives of the Welles family to the event. The ribbon was cut by Welles Homer and Claire Homer. Through the efforts of the Historical & Library Committee, chaired by Stephen B. Killian and co- chaired Daniel W. Volpetti, a significant collection of nineteenth-century volumes of literature and history was obtained for the Foundation from the estate of Virginia C. Welles to create a library to be dedicated to her husband, Edward Welles Jr. In addition, a collection of Welles family portraits was purchased from the estate and donated to the Foundation to augment the library collection.

To enhance the experience of members of The Westmoreland Club it dedicated a room for the Foundation to house the library and portrait collection. Displayed in bookcases designed by interior decorator, Janet E. Flack, the library collection and portraits provide a background for members to enjoy a relaxing lounge area. Other features of the Library & Heritage Room include plaques honoring members of The Westmoreland Club who served their country in World War I and World War II and the Veterans Honor Roll, dedicated in memory of Bruce E. Gover, Sr., as well as memorabilia related to the history of the Club.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

THE DOWNTOWN GRILLE

NEW MENU STARTING JULY 17!

When we visualize sunny summer days we picture grilled foods, a table filled with fresh pasta salad, chopped vegetables, and a big bowl of watermelon. These foods complement the summer eating styles that not only meet our cravings, but also provide nutrients (and hydration) that we need to feel our summer best and during the summer heat. Integrating seafood into our summer diets can further give us the energy boost and nutrients we need to thrive in the warmer, more active months of the year. Seafood boosts our energy in most cases because they are rich in Vitamins B12 and other B vitamins, Omega 3 fatty acids, and rich in protein. Vitamins B12 and other B vitamins are critical for the production of energy – both physical and mentally. Protein is critical in the summer months when the heat starts to dull our appetite. Protein is a key nutrient for good energy, healthy blood sugar levels, and to even build muscle after performing strenuous outdoor activities. The Downtown Grille is the perfect location to indulge in these items throughout the week. Our nightly menus offers plenty of seafood items to choose from and then on the weekend we expand those offerings with our interactive seafood market that is full of fresh fish delivered daily. WHY SEAFOOD IS ONE OF THE BEST FOODS IN THE SUMMER? Shrimp & Lobster Fettuccini: lobster, garlic sauteed colossal shrimp, roasted heirloom tomatoes, zucchini, lobster double cream, pecorino

PORCH WEATHER Rejoice in the warmer weather! Reserve a table for lunch or dinner on The Porch and sample the latest selection of in-favor handcrafted specialty cocktails and wine offerings, or save room and splurge on a decadent dessert creation composed in-house by the Westmoreland Club pastry team.

Reservations must be made by 5:00 PM that day to qualify.(Special dining nights and Club events are excluded.) One credit per month, per member.

COCKTAIL CORNER

“ One question I always get asked is “What’s your favorite cocktail ?” This was always a hard question for me because I appreciate all cocktails and believe they each have a time and place they are best enjoyed.

One cocktail that always stuck out to me and I was able to enjoy no matter what setting I’m in is the Orange Mezcal Crush. This is a cocktail featured in our Summer Cocktail Menu that was born from two of my favorite things, “Orange Crushes” and “Mezcal.” This drink utilizes smoky Mezcal Espadín, Dry Curacao, Fresh pressed O,J and Club. This cocktail is very bright and unique with the fresh all all-natural power of fresh orange juice complemented with the rich, complex flavor of Dry Curaçao. These sweet flavors are balanced out using Smoky Mezcal Espadín and tied together with Club Soda or Sprite. I will continue to share my love and passion for cocktails, spirits, wine and beer through our “Cocktail Corner” and hope you enjoy this cocktail as much as I do ! Cheers! Alex
