School News From Superintendent Anthony Vladu, Ed.D.
It is with tremendous pride and gratitude that we celebrate Gloucester County Public Schools being recognized as the number one school division in Region 3 and one of the top districts across Coastal Virginia, from the Carolina border to Northern Virginia. This achievement reflects the heart of a community that believes in the power of education and the promise of every student. Gloucester County Public Schools: A Community Committed to Excellence
Our success belongs to all of us. To our School Board and Board of Supervisors, thank you for your leadership and unwavering support of our schools. When we stay focused as a community, great things happen for our children. Your vision has helped make Gloucester a place where students can thrive. To our teachers, thank you for seeing the potential in every child, for believing in them even when challenges arise, and for not making excuses but making possibilities. Your dedication and passion have inspired excellence every day. You have built upon past successes and raised our division from 38th, to 22nd, and now to 15th statewide out of 131 districts in academic achievement. You have put Gloucester on the map as a phenomenal school system that is not about scores, but about caring for one another and creating an environment where excellence thrives. To our students, this honor is a reflection of your hard work, determination, and pride. To our parents and families, thank you for showing up, for your encouragement, and for believing in what we are building together. And to our community, thank you for standing behind our schools and reminding us every day that education is everyone’s responsibility. This year, all Gloucester County schools were rated On Track, meeting or exceeding expectations, and two schools earned Distinguished ratings, representing the highest level of recognition in Virginia. These results demonstrate what happens when a community comes together with purpose and heart. Education is economic development. When we equip our students with the skills to earn a living wage and the education to raise the quality of life for all in Gloucester, we build a stronger, more vibrant community. We are proud of this moment, but we are just getting started. The best is yet to come for our students and for Gloucester County.

A Major Moment in Virginia Education
For the first time in 26 years, Virginia is making a historic change to how student performance is measured on Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments. On September 25, 2025, the Virginia Board of Education unanimously approved revised cut scores for Mathematics and Reading SOL tests. This update represents one of the most significant shifts in education policy in a generation, impacting students, teachers, and parents across the Commonwealth. The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is gathering feedback to guide how these new standards will be implemented. Your voice matters. Learn more by visiting: https://www.doe.virginia.gov/teaching-learning-assessment/student- assessment/cut-scores. Educators will review proposed phased-in models, discuss a potential “approaching” performance level, and identify resources needed to support student growth toward higher expectations.
SOLs are not just a test; they represent a year-long curriculum, and the work to meet these higher expectations begins today. Every voice matters! Take advantage of these opportunities to have your voice heard!
