Neki muzeji impresioniraju obimom svojih zbirki. Neki stručnošću. Neki oči- glednom ljubavlju prema temi. A neki, poput Muzeja „Treći čovek“ , objedinju- ju sve to.
THROUGH VIENNA WITH ORSON WELLES
Post-war strains, shadowy figures and water that carries sound. The most famous scenes of legendary film The Third Man were shot in the sewers un- der Vienna city centre, and it is pre- cisely this part of the city that can to- day be accessed through guided tours. One of the greatest ever films tells a story set in Vienna in the aftermath of World War II, featuring scenes shot at authentic locations in the city of the late 1940s, when Vienna looked al- most exactly as the film needed it to look, having not yet recovered from the devastation of the war. Most loca- tions included in The Third Man still exist today, though many look a lit- tle different. Let’s take them in one at a time... Amusement park In one of the film’s most famous scenes, Holly finally entices Harry out of hiding and agrees to meet him at the Prater, a historic amusement park located in one of the city’s areas of greenery. At the centre of the scene is the Riesenrad, a giant wooden Fer- ris wheel where the two meet and talk high above the ground. That wheel still turns today and is preserved al- most in its original form. Although the scene in Reed’s film has an omi- nous tone, this wheel is more often associated with romantic moments in films like Before Sunrise or the James Bond classic The Living Daylights. Underground tour A tour dedicated to The Third Man provides an unforgettable way to
experience the world of this noir clas- sic. And you get to explore Vienna’s underground world just seven metres below the street, equipped with pro- tective helmets and lamps. The orig- inal spiral staircase that appears in the film leads you to one of the old- est parts of the city’s sewer network. These subterranean channels were constructed in the 1830s and re- main almost unchanged to this day. The chase scene with Orson Welles as Harry Lime became world famous – together with the Vienna sewage sys- tem itself. The tour culminates with a unique view of the river Wien be- low the level of the city – beneath the historic Naschmarkt, where it flows through a huge underground tunnel with impressive dimensions that are further emphasised by floodlights. Cinema and museum Vienna’s Burg Kino is known as one of the few cinemas in the world to have been regularly showing this classic 1949 film for decades, often in English. Located close to the city cen- tre, it is an essential stop for tourists wanting to follow in the footsteps of Harry Lime and to enjoy an authen- tic atmosphere for watching a film. Founded in 1912, Burg Kino is actu- ally one of the world’s oldest cinemas that remains operational. Some museums impress thanks to the volume of their collections, while some have impressive expertise and some present an obvious love for the subject. Others, like the Third Man Museum, combine all of these factors.
