façades present animated shows of flames, flags or abstract light patterns. And this theme is no ac- cident: this region's culture has been shaped for centuries by na- tural gas that bursts from the gro- und. Coastal city: life beside the Caspian Sea Baku occupies the shores of the Caspian Sea, representing the wor- ld’s largest enclosed body of wa- ter. Despite being called a sea, it is actually a lake with no connection to any oceans. This gives it a spe - cific character, calmer waters, a di - fferent composition and an almost endless horizon. The city’s life is linked strongly to its coastal na- ture. Baku Boulevard is a seaside promenade that extends for mo- re than three kilometres and repre- sents the central spot for daily life – walking, cycling, drinking coffee or nights out. Located along the length of the promenade are parks, restaurants and cultural contents,
as well as an observation wheel (Baku Eye). Although the city itself lacks cla- ssic urban beaches, bathing is po- ssible on the well-maintained be- aches of the Absheron Peninsula, located just a 20- to 40-minute dri- ve away. These are mostly bea - ch clubs with swimming pools and restaurants that become popular weekend destinations for local resi- dents during the warmer months. Baku is otherwise a city in whi- ch residents spend plenty of ti- me on the streets. Baku Boulevard extends towards the city’s cen- tral zones, including the standout area of Trg fonata (Fountains Squ - are), representing a social and cul- tural hub that boasts numerous fo- untains, cafés and open-air events. Connecting these parts of the ci- ty is Nizami Street, which provides clear insight into the way this city’s residents live, combining European urban life and an oriental atmosp- here, complete with shops, restau- rants and constant flows of people.
