T he latest exhibition at Bel- grade’s Museum of Afri- can Art, authored and cu-
rated by Ivana Vojt, deals with one of the key global challenges of growing levels of waste and how to transform it into a val- uable resource. Through art and craft practices from sub-Saharan Africa, the exhibition showcas- es how industrial waste – plas- tic, metal, textile and glass – is transformed into functional ob- jects like items of jewellery and souvenirs, thus testifying to the creativity and resourcefulness of local communities. The exhibi- tion relies on the museum’s rich collection, which has been en- riched continuously with the ad- dition of objects made from re- cycled materials since 1977, and further expanded with new ob- jects and donations that include works collected during research conducted in Tan- zania in 2024. The curatorial framework organises this exhibition ac- cording to material used: plastic, metal, and glass pack- aging, textiles, paper, and even discarded rubber flip- flops, highlighting both the industrial origins of these materials and the inventive strategies of their reuse. By interrogating the relationship between global econo- mies and local communities, the exhibition positions Africa as a vital locus within worldwide flows of waste and sustainable practices. The title of this exhibition, which runs at the MAU until 15 th September, calls on us to speak openly and urgently about the problem of waste and to recognise the artistic and artisanal po- tential of recycling.
