Barbra Streisand has said that she’s proud and deeply humbled to join the company of past recipients of an hon- orary Palme d‘Or. “In these challenging times, movies have the ability to open our hearts and minds to stories that re- flect our shared humanity, and to per- spectives that remind us of both our fragility and our resilience. Cinema tran- scends borders and politics, and affirms the power of imagination to shape a more compassionate world.” said this unique director, actress and singer, who will receive her award during the closing ceremony of 23 rd May. The documentary John Lennon: The Last Interview, by famous American di- rector Steven Soderbergh, will premiere at Cannes as part of the Special Screen- ings section. It tells the story of the last joint interview between John Lennon and Yoko Ono for RKO radio, which they gave just a few hours before the former Beatles frontman was gunned down on 8 th December 1980. Another documen- tary to be featured this year is famous filmmaker Ron Howard’s Avedon, which represents a portrait of legendary pho- tographer Richard Avedon. The Cannes audience will be the first to see the film Propeller One-Way Night Coach, representing the directorial debut of famous Hollywood actor John Travol- ta. This film will be shown out of compe- tition ahead of its formal global premiere on Apple TV on 29 th May. Travolta has dedicated his directorial debut to his late son Jett, who died in 2009. The film is based on the book of the same name that he wrote in 1997 and follows an eight- year-old boy on an exciting plane trip to Hollywood. The film also stars his daugh- ter, Ella Blue Travolta.

“The theatre is dark so that we may see the light of cinema. We confine our- selves within the theatre. To be enclosed in a theatre to watch films, and enclosed again to engage in debate with the mem- bers of the Jury, this double, voluntary confinement is something I await with great anticipation,” said Park. Cannes will this year present its honorary awards to the legendary Bar- bra Streisand and director Peter Jack- son. This three-time Oscar-winning di- rector, best known for the blockbuster Lord of the Rings trilogy, will receive his award during 12 th May’s opening ceremo- ny. Festival organisers have stressed that this award honours this filmmaker of “ex- ceptional artistic vision and technological boldness”, whose works combine Holly- wood spectacles and auteur film. “To be honoured with an Honor- ary Palme d’Or at Cannes is one of the greatest privileges of my career,” said Peter Jackson. “Cannes has been a meaningful part of my filmmaking jour- ney. In 1988, I attended the Festival

Marketplace with my first movie, Bad Taste, then in 2001 we screened a pre- view sequence from The Fellowship of the Ring, both of which were im- portant milestones in my career. This festival has always celebrated bold, vi- sionary cinema, and I’m incredibly grateful to the Festival de Cannes for be- ing recognised among the filmmakers and the artists whose work continues to inspire me.”
