im mini skirt, which has evolved from its Y2K version into something more mature – even with a length that’s reminiscent of a shirt. Skinny jeans are back to the peak of their power, with some of the trendiest examples sport- ing a sleek and elongated look. The trick lies primarily in the styling: try experimenting with contrasting silhou- ettes, as they’ve done at Celine, where an oversized tuxedo jacket and cow- boy boots have been paired with skin- ny jeans. Choose a lighter wash with a white jacket or a pair of classic blue jeans with a black tuxedo jacket for an evening out. Khaite has presented its narrow- er “cigarette jeans” that are tailored in a deep dark shade (more straight than completely narrow), while Victoria Beckham chose maximum volume with flared jeans in a near-black wash. “We are seeing washes really clean up: rinse and dark, bright blues with minimal sanding or dry processing feel most relevant,” says Frame’s Kate Keyes. “Ultimately, it is about creating a chic, clean jean that complements the com- plexity of a woman’s life.” Low-rise waists are a key trend again this season. “We’re seeing the rise drop again naturally—girls are al- ready wearing denim hip-slung and sizing up for that oversized look— so we designed new silhouettes with a true low-rise built in, across both slim and wide-legs, to meet her where she already is,” says Re/Done’s Mere- dith Kahn. Across the board, “low-rise is still very much here and it is not go- ing anywhere anytime soon,” explains Keyes. “There’s a growing appetite for lower-rise denim paired with more tai- lored legs that focus on the body’s nat- ural form,” adds Agolde’s Karen Phelps. Coloured denim might just be the season’s “joker in the deck”. Col- our transforms everyday combinations from neutral and earthy tones to un- expected hues. Some brands are exper- imenting with sun-drenched colours like light pink and burnt orange, while others are offering brighter tones. At Citizens of Humanity, the focus is on grey: “After a season dominated by sat- urated washes, the mood is turning cooler and more refined. Grey wears like a neutral, but reads decidedly di-
rectional, bringing polish and edge in equal measure.” Colour is certainly trending, but stick to muted shades if you want to nail the trend. If none of these tickled your fash- ion fancy, opt for cool straight-leg jeans. This classic is never actually out of fashion, but such jeans feel fresh again this year (perhaps over nostalgia for Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's style after the show Love Story).
