PETER STERLING 2025 Letter from the President

Howdy Rodeo Fans,

We welcome you to your Santa Maria Elks Rodeo 82nd Anniversary! Rodeo is a unique sport that grew out of the old west. The cattle ranchers used horses to work their stock, and they developed techniques to separate their cattle, rope, tie and brand the calves. Much of what we see today is still being used at branding time on our local ranches. I have fond memories, as a child, of going to my friends ranch in Springville, California, where

branding time was particularly special. While the ranch hands were rounding up the cattle, my friends and I would hop on a calf and see how long we could stay on before falling off. It was a blast!! Rodeo is not only enjoyable to watch, but it plays a very important role in promoting the Western Lifestyle, that promotes the love for God, Family and Country. It’s a privilege for the Elks Recreation Board of Directors and myself to bring this experience to you. This year’s rodeo performances you will see this year did not happen by themselves. Rodeo planning requires several hundred volunteers who literally donate thousands of man-hours to put together this four-day event. The rails had to be painted, weeds cleared, arena grounds prepared, welding, digging, cleaning, maintaining, landscaping and much, much more all done by selfless volunteers. Rodeo not only plays an important role in providing our community a form of family entertainment, it also is instrumental in providing funds to charities through our Rodeo Queen Contest. This brings the total funds raised to over $17 million. The funds are raised by local charities to assist with youth programs, sports, scholarships, homeless veterans and a countless list of other projects that are used for the betterment of our community. I would like to thank you for coming out and being a part of the family tradition of Rodeo. We promise you an exciting event, and a good time for all! Peter Sterling, President, Elks Recreation, Inc.

Exalted Ruler of Santa Maria Lodge #1538 STEVE REYBURN

Welcome to the 82 Santa Maria Elks Rodeo! nd

For a few months each year, everyone gets into western, a cowboy, a rodeo frame of mind. Outcome the Wranglers and Resistol hats, boots are dusted off and now you are here, ready to see the most traditional American entertainment, the best of the west, the Santa Maria Elks Rodeo. This great production would not exist without the combined efforts of a lot of people. Flying U Rodeo provides outstanding rough stock to test the skill and courage of the riders in the bareback, saddle bronc and of course, the crowd favorite, bull riding. Over the years first Cotton Rosser and now his son Reno and his entire crew provide us with specialty acts designed to thrill and entertain us.

Worlds famous announcers Bob Tallman and Anthony Lucia keep the action flowing with explanations of the event and even personal anecdotes on the riders. Barrelman Matt Merritt will keep us all entertained.

The entrants in the timed events such as team roping, tie down roping and of course barrel racing are not out there by themselves. They compete with their highly trained partners, their horses. Be sure to encourage all the contestants with your cheers and applause, they work hard to get in that arena for such a short time.

Of course, the rodeo would not exist were it not for Elks Recreation, Inc., Santa Maria Elks Lodge 1538, and the volunteers dedicated to this annual event.

Since 1943 hundreds of volunteers come together each year to accomplish the daunting task of producing our community’s most famous annual event. It is a testament to our civic pride that, over the years, thousands have given time, labor and especially enthusiasm to ensure a successful rodeo. From the time you enter the grounds until you are ushered out, you enjoy the benefits of their labor of love. Please take a moment to thank a volunteer. I guarantee it will bring a smile to a busy face. There was a reason for the genesis of our rodeo way back when our country was at war. Our kids are our future and what better investment in their future than to raise money for youth recreation? In just over 80 years various sponsor groups have entered a young lady in our annual queen contest. These organizations have raised over seventeen million ($17,000,000). Thank you to all the generous contributors. I am honored to be the Exalted Ruler of Santa Maria Lodge #1538 this year. My First Lady and I welcome you to our 82 Elks Rodeo. On behalf of the Lodge Officers Corp., the Directors and members of Elks Recreation Inc., we hope you enjoy Rodeo and the related activities. nd

2025 Queen Candidate Bethany Gamino

Biography of Bethany Gamino - Kiwanis Club of Guadalupe

My name is Bethany Gamino, and I am honored to be representing the Kiwanis Club of Guadalupe as their 2025 Santa Maria Elks Rodeo Queen Candidate.

I am 16 years old, and I am a Junior at Pioneer Valley High School where I’ve maintained a 3.9 GPA. I have been involved in Track and Field and various Christian clubs on campus that teach me to love God and love others. I love to sing and play the guitar and piano. I am currently one of the youth worship leaders at my church and involved with their children’s ministry. I plan to attend Allan Hancock College and then transfer to Cal State Long Beach to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. My mother works in the medical field, and I plan to follow in her footsteps to care for and support others in their time of need. I am grateful for this opportunity to represent a wonderful organization that shares my love and passion for serving the community and especially the youth. It is the mission of Kiwanis Club of Guadalupe to support various clubs, sports, schools, youth, churches, and community senior center and I long to have that same dedication of improving the world one child and one community at a time. I want to thank my family and my grandfather, David Rodriguez, for his dedication as a longtime member of Kiwanis of Guadalupe, and for leaving a legacy of service and teaching me the honor of putting others above myself.

2025 Queen Candidate Brianna Hill

Biography of Brianna Hill - Saints Football Boosters

Hi my name is Brianna Hill, and I am extremely honored to represent the Saints Football Boosters organization as their Queen Candidate for this year’s Santa Maria Elks Rodeo. I am 18 years old and a senior at Santa Maria High School. Throughout high school, I have played and competed at the varsity level for softball and basketball, two sports I am passionate about. After graduation, my goal is to further my education by attending a four-year university where I can continue playing sports and obtain a degree in pediatric medicine. Any scholarships I win from this competition will be used towards my education to become a pediatrician, so that I can come back and support the community that supported me throughout my life. Both of my parents served in the armed forces, and I grew up seeing the sacrifices both of them have made for our country and my life. As I embark on this journey, I want to share the values my parents have instilled in me, which is to always stand up for what I believe in. This year, I will represent the Santa Maria Saints Football Boosters and the American GI Forum Education Foundation. Both organizations value the importance of helping those in our community and supporting the families that make this city so wonderful. I am excited to share my journey with each person in our community, and I would love to be named your 2025 Santa Maria Elks Rodeo Queen!

2025 Queen Candidate Rylee McGinley

Biography of Rylee McGinley - St. Joseph High School

I am excited to introduce myself as your 2025 Santa Maria Elks Rodeo Queen Candidate! My name is Rylee McGinley, and I am 18 years old, currently a senior at St. Joseph High School. I am actively involved in a variety of activities that showcase my leadership, creativity, and passion for our school and community. As the Vice President of the California Scholarship Federation and the Treasurer of the National Honor Society, I have had the opportunity to organize many events over the past three years, including pickleball tournaments and an International Food Fair. Alongside my academic dedication, I serve as the Captain of the Varsity Cheer and the Stunt team. Looking ahead, I plan to attend a four-year university to pursue a career in pediatric nursing. My deepest goal in life is to spread love and kindness and to ensure that all children have equal opportunities for a bright future. I am incredibly honored to be chosen as the Rodeo Queen Candidate and am eager to continue my Aunt Roxy Leppo's legacy, who was crowned the Elks Rodeo Queen in 1972. I am excited about this campaign, which will support children in obtaining a quality education just like I received at St. Joseph High School. It is important to me that financial barriers do not prevent any child from receiving a quality education.

By fundraising for tuition assistance, we can create a more inclusive and equitable educational environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.

In Loving Memory JIM GLINES

Jim Glines was born in 1942 in San Antonio, Texas but moved to Santa Maria as a baby. He grew up a cowboy on the Rock Front Ranch in Cuyama raising cattle and chickens and riding off into the back country every chance he got. His parents were cattle ranchers and Jim learned about hard work, long hours and the value of family. Jim attended St. Mary’s school, Santa Maria High School and ultimately went to Cal Poly SLO where he got his degree in ranch management. He expected to return to the Rock Front upon graduation but his parents retired and sold the ranch before he graduated. He instead turned to a career in banking which led him to ultimately co- found Community Bank of Santa Maria. Jim had many passions including banking, auctioneering and hunting but one of his favorite things was rodeo. He loved the Santa Maria Elks Rodeo and could always be found in his box seats taking in the show. He dedicated 20 years to the Rodeo Queen Contest and always enjoyed the Friday night coronation of the Queen and her court. While Bull Riding was his favorite event, Jim didn’t miss any of the action of the rodeo. Jim spent many a night shaking hands with Cotton Rosser as he “rode the rail”and the two would share a quick story about some rodeo in some town someplace. He grew up watching the likes of Clarence Minetti, Ernie Righetti and Cotton Rosser and like those local legends ,his passing left a big hole in the community. As much as he’s missed here, we take comfort knowing he’s reunited with his friends and heroes and is horseback someplace looking over his herd. Ride Cowboy Ride.

Most of Roberts life was filled with bbqing for family & friends and various organizations. At every get together, party or event you could find him behind the ‘cue cooking up some Santa Maria Style BBQ. He has spent many years working to cater and bring the Santa Maria Style Barbecue to our local high schools & community. Robert became an Elk and started barbecuing on crews for events and running his crew for Cook Your Own (CYO). He became the chair for BBQ Teams and CYO and continues to volunteer his time to help contribute to the lodge. In July 2019, Robert was honored as Elk of the month and also received a presidential volunteer service award. He received the Grand Lodge, Grand Exalted Ruler’s Outstanding Service Commendation for the 2020-2021 Elk year.

Wednesday Performance Dedication CHRIS ROWLES

Christopher Rowles a Nipomo native, has been an integral part of the Elks Recreation Team for many years and we are proud to dedicate the Opening Day Rodeo Performance in his honor.

Chris is a man of many trades from being a full time UPS driver by day to the coordinator of lighting for concerts and dance performances at the Solvang Theaterfest, but his true passion is equestrians. He was introduced to horses at the age of 3 by his mom through the California Gymkhana Association and has never looked back. Growing up as a member of the Gymkhana association Chris participated in equestrian events that test speed, precision and team work between horse and rider and today is the President of Gymkhana Association’s District 40, Central Coast Riders. With this position Chris coordinates 1 event each month at the Elks Event Center that plays host to up to 50 riders. Chris started at the Rodeo grounds being a gate assistant and after many years was asked to take over that post for the Rodeo, which he gladly did. Today, Chris is the Out Gate Committee Chairman and helps tirelessly to insure a smooth and timely transition for each group as they enter and exit the arena during the Rodeo performances. He has also been instrumental in the success of the Haunted Hills and Christmas in the Country Holiday Events for the past 5 years.

Born and raised on California’s Central Coast, Kristie has dedicated her life to education, community service, and uplifting those around her. A proud graduate of Righetti High School and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, she holds a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master’s in Education, and a Teaching Credential. Her career in education has taken her through RHS, SMHS, PVHS, Delta, and currently the Mark Richardson CTE Center, where she serves as a Special Education Teacher and CTE Specialist. Kristie is also a mentor, student teacher supervisor, and active member on numerous committees—roles that reflect her passion for shaping the future. Kristie feels so blessed to be a part of an amazing community. As a cancer survivor, the Golden Circle of Champions Program holds deep personal meaning to her. She also volunteers at other organizations like Elks Recreation, Altrusa, 4-H, FFA, Grange, Girl Scouts, Warrior Goat, and others. She is also honored to serve as President of the Santa Maria High School FFA Booster Club. Whether teaching, mentoring, or planning events, she strives to lead with faith, compassion, and a heart for service. Most of all, she is proud to be Kayce and Kyle’s mom. Marc DeBernardi is a dedicated agricultural educator at Santa Maria High School, where he has taught for the past 29 years. Raised on a local dairy farm in Santa Maria, Marc's deep-rooted connection to agriculture has profoundly influenced his teaching philosophy and community involvement. Marc and his students have collaborated with the Elks Organization in various capacities for more than 20 years. With the help of Santa Maria FFA members, Marc and hundreds of Santa Maria FFA members over the years have dedicated thousands of hours of service to a wide range of projects and events with the Elks Organization. Marc has been a member of the Elks Lodge 1538 for the past 21 years and has also been involved with the California Agriculture Teachers Association for 29 years. In his spare time, he has served as a basketball official with the Los Padres Basketball Officials Association and Central Coast Officials Association for over 30 years. Marc finds great fulfillment in serving his community, fostering young leaders, and working within the agricultural industry. Tyler Dickinson—educator, mentor, and hometown advocate whose dedication to agriculture and youth leadership has left a lasting mark on the Santa Maria Elks Rodeo and our broader Central Coast community. For the past eight years, Tyler has served as an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Pioneer Valley High School, shaping the next generation of leaders through hands-on learning, civic responsibility, and a relentless belief in student potential. Under his guidance, Pioneer Valley FFA has celebrated many recognitions and awards. Tyler’s roots run deep in the Santa Maria Valley. Raised on the last dairy in Santa Barbara County, he fondly remembers helping his grandparents host school field trips—memories that sparked a lifelong devotion to agriculture. His family’s evolution into cattle ranching and berry farming mirrors his own ethos: evolving with purpose while honoring heritage. Today, that legacy continues. For Tyler, the Santa Maria Elks Rodeo is more than just an event—it’s family. It’s tradition. It’s home. And it’s where his students learn to live the FFA motto: “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, and Living to Serve.” Whether they come from generations of farmers and ranchers or are new to boots and belt buckles, Tyler believes in every student’s ability to thrive. Because of leaders like Tyler Dickinson, that future is brighter than ever.

Saturday Performance Dedication BILL AGIN

Bill Agin as the oldest of five siblings in a Southern California cowboy family, found that hard work, music, and Rodeo have directed his entire life.

The first professional rodeo that he competed in was Cheyenne Frontier Days in 1970. Eight World Championships in Xtreme Bronc Riding and 55 years later, he is still involved with the great sport of rodeo.

Playing music and performing was a natural progression for Bill as his dad, Hal Agin, was a touting member of “the Sons of the Pioneers” during the 1960s.

His wife Chris, their sons, Wade, and Trace, and their wives, Darci and Rhianna, and daughter, Cheyenne, along with their eight Grandchildren, are all residing in the Santa Ynez Valley, and are the greatest blessings in this life.

Rodeo, Music, and other business interests still keep Bill busy every day of the week. He is continually asked, “Bill, when are you going to retire, or at least slow down”. His reply, “The Lord gave me a few talents, an abundance of energy, a lot of luck and I have no desire to quit”.

My volunteering with the Santa Maria Elks Rodeo started a few years back when my daughter, Hannah, won the Miss Mini title in 2018, after that I was hooked. I enjoyed it so much that I volunteered to take on the roll as committee chairman for the annual Miss Mini and Jr. Barrelman contests along with becoming the committee chair for Boots in the Stands, where I oversee local youth organizations go through the Rodeo grandstands at each rodeo performance collecting donations in cowboy boots for the Golden Circle of Champions Pediatric Awareness Non-profit program. I have also had the pleasure of assisting with the growth of the Golden Circle of Champions programs here at home along with at the National Rodeo Finals in Las Vegas. My daughter Ashley ran for Elks Rodeo Queen in 2022 and since then I have had the opportunity to assist many Santa Maria Elks Rodeo Princesses during their campaigns. With so much help needed during the months leading up to the rodeo I also offer assistance at the office with various tasks in preparation for the big event. Outside of the rodeo, I have worked at an elementary school for the past 15 years, helping to shape the lives of thousands of local youth, along with supporting my girls and family friends that raise pigs each year for the Santa Barbara County Fair. In my free time away from the rodeo, I enjoy road trips with my husband Rich, who supports me as I focus on my passion of helping others. Sunday Performance Dedication CHERI PALIN

Parade Chairman JAIME FLORES

Howdy Santa Maria Valley,

Last year we celebrated the 81 Annual Rodeo Parade and it did not disappoint. There were over 100 entries from all over the region and thousands of parade fans lined the streets from Mill Street to Enos Drive. Entries and participation were at capacity as was the prior year's event and we are expecting the same this year. As we prepare for our 82 Anniversary, the Parade Committee has continued to recruit and add new volunteers. We have been fundraising, seeking sponsorship since February and the parade will return to local TV with our partners at KSBY. For all the support I'd like to thank the volunteers, of course all our attendees and their families as the parade is not possible without you, Santa Maria Elks Lodge 1538, our Parade Committee, and a huge thank you to all our sponsors and the Chairmen before me. These individuals have laid the foundation for me and Parade Chairmen of the future to ensure this long-standing tradition continues to support and give back to the community that has embraced it for the last 81 years. I am looking forward to what the future holds for the parade and continuing to celebrate this long-time tradition for our community. st nd
