OPTICAL CONNECTIONS WEBINARS 2023

Following on from successes in previous years, Optical Connections’ webinar series continued in 2023 with sessions on Why We Need New Architectures and Support Systems and Sustainability in Telecoms Services and Technology . Developed in conjunction with the Market Focus Committee, the webinar programme was launched in early 2021. OPTICAL CONNECTIONS WEBINAR SERIES 2023

SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR FIBRE NETWORKS: 21ST JUNE, 2023.

This webinar, sponsored by ENSURE , covered fibre network management with presentations from senior experts in the industry. From having a real-time view of everything that is happening across a network, to rolling out new services and ensuring a positive customer experience, Operational Support Systems (OSS) are the key to monitoring, controlling and monetising networks. The presentations were as follows: RURAL BROADBAND, THE FINAL CHAPTER IN FTTP! Glenn Wellbrock, director, optical transport network architecture, design and planning, Verizon Glenn says the technology is available, but the business case is challenging therefore there is a need for government intervention/incentives. His presentation explained how Verizon is approaching the unique nature of these rural builds by modifying existing architectures and support systems to serve both residential and business customers in remote communities! HOW TO STRETCH LIMITS OF PON NETWORKS BY DEPLOYING NOVEL SPLITTING STRUCTURES Erik Pennings, Business Development Director at Ensure. Erik’s presentation stresses the importance of creating an increasingly interconnected world.. However, PON networks are going up in speed and/or reaching more of us, including in rural areas and there are situations where carriers can be short on fibre

or run into power budget issues. For these situations, he said, deploying novel splitting structures, such as asymmetric splitters, can offer great benefits. His presentation detailed how these components can help and a number of interesting use cases were discussed. WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING AN OSS/BSS FOR YOUR FIBRE BUSINESS? Johan Hjalmarsson, NetAdmin Johan discussed what to consider when choosing an OSS/BSS for a fibre business. He emphasizes the importance of OSS/BSS in the industry and highlights key factors to consider, including important processes and how fibre networks differ compared to other access technologies. He suggested that investing in the right tools from the beginning is crucial for building a successful fibre network. EVOLUTION OF LONG-HAUL OPTICAL NETWORK DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS, ADOPTING AI/ML Andrea Di Giglio, Telecom Italia Di Giglio explained that machine learning techniques, based on learning on set-up light paths can be useful for new design or for a quick recovery after a fault. Furthermore, the growing occurrences of hacker attacks on optical layer can be faced by a classification and root cause analysis based on AI/ML techniques.

SUSTAINABILITY IN TELECOM SERVICES AND TECHNOLOGIES – 29TH MARCH 2023

OPTICAL CONNECTIONS WEBINAR SERIES IN 2021 • Close to the Edge:Fibre for any-haul in 5G access networks – 31st March 2021 • Replacing the copper infrastructure – 26th May 2021 • Managing the fibre network – 15th July 2021 Helen Xenos, Senior Director, Portfolio Marketing, Ciena In her presentation, Ciena’s Helen Xenos explained how greener networks are made possible by continuous innovation in coherent optical technology, which supports exponential capacity increases while keeping power and energy consumption in check. She said delivering a massive amount of bandwidth in an automated, flexible way, will continue to be a key imperative for network providers. GREENER NETWORKS MADE POSSIBLE BY COHERENT INNOVATIONS network production and use in a larger context. He also discussed the electricity savings potential under different scenarios, and proposed policy and technology implications. GREEN ICT – CHALLENGES AND REQUIREMENTS Klaus Grobe, Senior Director Global Sustainability, ADVA This presentation gave an overview on ICT environmental aspects, focusing on wireline network equipment. Relevant drivers and challenges related to ICT’s environmental footprint were identified, including the question of longevity vs. energy efficiency. This was complemented by a brief overview on legal and other relevant requirements related to environmental sustainability in ICT.

This first webinar in our 2023 series was a great success and enjoyed by the many participants who attended. Introduced and moderated by Market Focus committee members Stephan Neidlinger and Pierpaolo Ghiggino, presentations included: THE ENERGY AND CARBON FOOTPRINT OF ICT, ENTERTAINMENT AND MEDIA. Jens Malmodin, Senior Specialist, Ericsson Jens Malmodin concluded that continuous improvements and miniaturisation year by year, and sometimes larger steps due to brand new technologies, has not only led to lower energy consumption, but also less overall use of materials. FUTURE TRENDS OF GREEN ALL OPTICAL NETWORKS IN A LARGE CONTEXT

Dr. Anders. S.G. Andrae, Assistant Chief Expert of Environmental Protection Technology, Huawei.

CATCH UP ON DEMAND OPTICAL CONNECTIONS WEBINAR SERIES IN 2022 • Webinar 1: Optical Communications – 4th May 2022 • Webinar 2: Fibre: how to monetise? – 27th July 2022 Dr. Andrae predicted that volumes of data to be handled in the future will be very large and therefore the networks of the future have to possess certain characteristics. His presentation included slides showing foreseen trends for key metrics and power saving technologies, along with macro graphs placing fixed optical
