GRACE AND GOODNESS THOUGHTS ON THE GIFT OF GIVING
Many years ago, a man forever changed my life — and I have no idea who he is.
to share my belief that the best way we can use whatever skill sets we’ve been blessed with is to do good for others whenever we can.
As a teenager, I served in a church organization as a peer counselor, helping people my age navigate their trials and tribulations. At that time, word spread about a mysterious benefactor who helped fund people’s educations based on their grade point averages. None of us had a clue who this individual was, as he worked through a point person who gathered information from people and reported back to him. Eager to start what would eventually become my career, I submitted my GPA and hoped for the best. Before long, I received financial help to attend community college. To this day, this community member’s identity hasn’t been revealed.
As a parent, I’m grateful to see this spirit live in my children. My son, Gavin, often volunteers to help people experiencing tough times, and both he and my daughter, Ella, received special awards at school last year for being so giving and helpful. If the gentleman who helped me all those years ago is still with us, I hope he’s heard about the kids and knows that his investment in me paid off and lives on.
While helping someone financially or logistically is always wonderful, giving someone time is often the best way to be of service. Modern times are challenging for many, so being available emotionally and opening our ears and hearts is just as crucial as opening our wallets. We may live in uncertain days, but we know God wants us to be there for each other. While getting fired up over a political issue or world event is easy, we should never forget that we’re a blessed nation built on generosity. Giving is the cornerstone of a life worth living, and I hope to give more of myself as my life moves forward and encourage you to do the same. In
“The best way we can use whatever skill sets we’ve been blessed with is to do good for others whenever we can.”
Whoever this person was, he’s been on my mind a lot lately, especially since Worldwide Day of Giving is on June 15. Twenty-five years after going into business, I recognize more than ever how fortunate I was to have built a life for myself through a stranger’s kindness. In my mind, this fellow’s anonymity was the truest form of giving possible. He never looked for acknowledgement of his deeds; he simply gave of himself to brighten the lives of those around him.
With his goodness never far from my heart, I do my best to follow his example and conduct my life with humility and gratitude. Yes, BLG Environmental Services is how I earn a living and support the ones I love, but it’s also a way to give back. Over the years, I’ve given people money to give to someone in need with the promise that my involvement would remain a secret, and I’ve done work for people for free now and then. It’s a little strange to mention these things, as I don’t want to make it all about me, but it’s important

Shade, Safety, and Style
As the summer sun kicks into full gear, now is a great time to take a fresh look at how your landscape works for you, especially in terms of comfort, energy efficiency, and visual appeal.
Strategic tree planting is one of the smartest and most rewarding upgrades you can make this time of year. Beyond enhancing curb appeal, thoughtfully placed trees can serve multiple purposes, including the following:
• • • •
Framing architecture and walkways
Creating layered privacy Blocking unwanted views
Adding structure and balance to open spaces
But there’s also a deeper value: saving energy. Planting deciduous trees (those that lose their leaves in winter) on the south and west sides of your home can provide much-needed shade during the hottest months, significantly reducing the temperature around your house and lowering cooling costs. In the winter, those same trees allow sunlight to filter through and help warm your home naturally. It’s a beautiful way to combine aesthetics with long-term efficiency. And while trees lead during the day, landscape lighting transforms your property after sunset. Quality lighting enhances the ambiance and highlights the textures, colors, and architectural features that go unnoticed in daylight. It also provides these benefits:
WHY SUMMER IS THE BEST TIME TO ADD TREES AND LIGHTING
GAVIN’S GUYS Grading, Grading, Grading!
Hello, everyone! I hope you’re all enjoying the start of summertime. By the time you read this update, school will be over for me until the fall. Although I’m away from class for the next couple of months, I will be very busy before I start middle school in September. As I mentioned in my last message, I’ve been helping my dad at the farm. And, back in April, he started having me operate a big grading machine, which makes me feel like I’m operating a tank! I’ve driven carts and other smaller stuff before, but working with machinery of this size has been a new and exciting experience. Operating heavy equipment at 11 is a dream come true for me! Right now, we’re working to smooth out about 30 acres of land. We put in 10–12-hour days, including driving an hour each way to the farm. I love being outside and doing meaningful work, and working every day has made me love farming even more. When I go to trade shows with Dad, I give the companies my contact information.
I’ve been getting equipment and machinery magazines sent to me, and I keep them organized in a binder in my room. I update Dad on the equipment we need and how much it costs. Speaking of grading, Dad took me off the machine for a short time before school got out so I could focus more time on improving my math and language grades. At first, I didn’t think I’d need to learn about these subjects much as a would-be farmer, but Dad convinced me that I’d need those skills to handle budgeting and communicating with others in my career down the road. He inspired me to work harder at school, and I was back on the machine in no time! I hope everyone reading this message enjoys the summer! I’ll leave you with a lesson I learned as a farmer: The season can be a lot of fun, but you need to stay hydrated along the way!
I’ll be back with another update in the fall!

New Family Aquatic Sports for Summer Fun
Water Fun for the Whole Family MAKE A SPLASH! Few outdoor activities are more fun to do as a family than beating the heat in the water. A facility as simple as a community pool can offer fun for all ages, including wading, diving, and lap swimming.
Snorkeling Snorkeling is a great family activity for all ages if you’re vacationing near an ocean. Flippers, watertight goggles, and snorkels are easy to rent or buy. Exploring the wonders beneath the waves is as easy as floating on the surface and paddling your flippers. While any clear ocean waters can be fun to explore, consider trekking to Hawaii or Cozumel to see spectacular schools of fish and rock formations. Canoeing and Kayaking Few aquatic activities offer more opportunities for reflection and quiet conversation than paddling a canoe or kayak. These watercraft are usually available to rent near lakes and rivers, and, barring rough weather, navigating with them is relatively safe and easy. Pack a picnic, explore, and see what you can find along a river or lakeshore.
Waterskiing While this sport requires access to a speedboat and a skilled operator, arranging to try it can offer unforgettable thrills. Nothing can compare to the exhilaration as you first rise above the waves and stand on your skis; participants also get a full- body workout! Waterskiing poses a challenge for beginners when crossing the wake and keeping their legs beneath them, but the rewards are worth the effort! This summer, consider vacationing near a body of water to explore these aquatic activities or others, such as sailing or bodyboarding. You will create lasting memories and may ignite passions your kids will enjoy for years!
As summer gets underway, consider making plans to try more complex aquatic sports as a family. Here are four exciting options that will inspire the whole family to take the plunge. Stand-Up Paddleboarding This sport originated among Hawaiian surfers and began gaining momentum nationwide about a decade ago. Participants stand upright on a flat, buoyant board and propel themselves over lakes, rivers, and oceans with a single paddle. Paddleboards are bigger than surfboards and are stable enough to hold a picnic in a waterproof bag!
