2. "And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues" (v. 20). Be fore Saul’s conversion, he was “breath ing out threatenings and slaughter” (v. 1). Immediately afterward, he spoke words of blessing and salvation. It takes the new birth to bring about the miracle of a transformed tongue. 3. "All that heard him were amazed" (v. 21). The new birth brings amaze ment. The transformation of Paul was a miracle of grace, a miracle more wonderful than miracles of physical healing, or wonders in nature. 4. "The disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket" (v. 25). Paul could have re mained in Damascus and suffered al most sure death. Should he have done this? It was evidently the feeling of Paul and his fellow disciples that it is better to live for Christ than to die for him inopportunely, provided Jiv ing can be without denying him (cf. Matt. 10:23). Thus Paul’s life was pre served that he might herald Christ’s message, and live Christ’s life in many countries and cities. An Irish convict from his cell caught the strains of a gospel song coming from the lips of Sankey as he sang in an adjoining building, and, unknown to himself, Sankey had won a soul. A trooper chaplain was praying with a companion on the floor of a van during the South African War, and underneath the- wagon lay a soldier; he awoke and listened, and through the influence of the words, he found Christ. Thus the companion and the soldier were both won by the same message. God is giving proof in thou sands of>instances that he who works in this vineyard is to reckon that one may “chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight,” for it is God that giveth “the increase.” —The Bottles of Heaven. LESSON STORY: After Saul heard the voice of the Lord Jesus as he was traveling on the road to Damascus, and answered, “Lord,, what wilt thou have me to do?” he became a new person. With love for Jesus in his heart, he no longer wanted to do the wicked things he had done before. But people kept whispering among themselves like this: “Isn’t he the very one who used to hurt the Christians, and even have them tied with ropes and carried away? We must have nothing to do with him!” All this talk about Saul’s old life made it hard for him to preach to the people about the Lord Jesus, but he went right on and spoke with so much power that those who heard him could not even answer back. But they were angry—so angry that they tried to kill him. The Lord helped Saul to get away and to go to the big city of Jerusalem. There he found a friend named Barnabas. “Why, I know this man Saul!” Bar nabas must have said with a happy smile. And then he explained about Saul’s new life that he had begun when he received the Lord Jesus into his heart. Barnabas showed Jesus’ friends that they should welcome Saul and be kind to him, forgetting every thing that was past. Barnabas really was saying, “Whoever loves the Lord Jesus is a person we must love, too.” That is what our Memory Verse tells iis. Object Lesson g F lying F lags OBJECTS: Various national flags, a flag with a red cross, and a flag with a skull and crossbones on it. LESSON: I thought you would be interested in seeing some flags. You will notice flags representing our own country as well as various foreign countries. These are days when the men of,our armed forces are risking their lives to uphold tHe honor of our nation and flag. Did you know that every one carries some kind of a flag? Here are two flags—the flag of life and the flag of death—one of which is carried by every one, no matter what his nationality may be. Often different flags mean opposing forces. These two flags are opposed to each other. As I look at this flag of death, I am reminded of Saul of Tarsus. He was attempting to carry out a mission of death,'when Christ met him on the Damascus road. After Saul met Christ, his whole life was changed. In Acts 9:20 we read, “And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.” So completely was Saul changed that many did not understand
