them. After considerable discussion, it was decided to submit the question to the leaders at Jerusalem. Thus in that city was held the first church council. The result was that the council sent a letter to the brethren affected, in which it was declared that those who taught fhat believers must be circum cised had no authority from Jerusalem, but were “subverting” the souls of be lievers. The letter stated that the apostles and elders, together with the whole church (cf. v. 22), were writing, “having come to one accord” (v. 25, R. V.); that is, it was a unanimous decision. Then the council delegated Judas and Silas to go with Barnabas and Paul and confirm the writing by word of mouth. # This decision of the apostles, elders, and members of thife church, is largely forgotten in these days when so much of legalism is being taught, “subvert ing” the souls of believers. It affirmed what is also largely forgotten, that salvation corner—just as Paul preached —by simple faith in Jesus Christ, apart altogether from works of the law. II. | T he R eport , to the G entiles (G al , 2:1, 2, 9, 10) Paul rehearsed the visit he made to Jerusalem where he had consulted with “them which were of reputation” (v. 2). He would not become entan gled with any particular party or group among them, but would deal only with those who were •accounted to be leaders. After consulting with these leaders, it was found that they had nothing to add, and they acknowledged that Paul and Barnabas had a special calling among the Gentiles to give them the gospel of grace apart from the law of Moses. Then these leaders, James, Peter, and John, gave to Barnabas and Paul the right hand of fellowship, thus rec ognizing the gospel of grace as be ing wholly sufficient for salvation (vs. 9, 10). III. T he C hristian ' s P osition (G al . 2:20, 21) .Christ Jesus was not only the sacri fice for sins, but He was also the sub stitute in whom all believers were and are seen as crucified. Actually, the old creation came to an end when Christ died, and God is now dealing with the new creation which began

Acts 15:23b The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of” the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia: 24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have trou bled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law; to whom we gave no such com mandment: 25 It seemed good unto us, being assem bled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul. • 26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord JeSus Christ. 27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth. 28 For it seemed good to the Holy Gbost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: 29 That ye abstain from meats offered to Idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well. ---------- Galatians 2:1 Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also. 2 And I went up by revelation, and com municated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means 1 should run, or had run, in vain. 9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fel lowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. 10 Only they would that we should re member the poor; the same which I also was forward to do* ----- — 20 I am crucified with Christ: never theless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
