ACCREDITATION UPDATE 

Dean dialogue

FACTS & FIGURES The symbol of Chuo University is the hakumon , the institution’s original stone white gate. The hakumon is said to have become a lasting association because the university’s philosophy and spirit towards learning drew parallels with the colour white’s links to perceptions of truth and integrity. As of May last year, CBS had 153 students. Across the wider university’s eight faculties, there were a total of 25,972 students and a further 1,145 students studying at its eight postgraduate schools. Chuo University currently has partnership agreements with 211 colleges, universities and other educational organisations in 41 countries and regions worldwide.

What has AMBA accreditation and membership of the AMBA network meant for your school since your accreditation was first announced? “After the announcement by AMBA, the evaluation of CBS, especially among students and applicants, changed significantly. Many students have reaffirmed the value of our MBA programme and are more aware of the globalisation of business through AMBA accreditation. “In addition, all CBS faculty members have become more engaged in improving educational programmes and strengthening stakeholder relations. Active dialogue on how to further upgrade the educational programmes is taking place through independent advisory board meetings and faculty development activities. To achieve this, collaborations with the other schools and institutions of Chuo University, as well as industry-university co-operation with companies and organisations, are also being discussed.” How would you describe your unique selling point to other members of the AMBA network? “We have been offering well-organised courses to foster our students as change leaders, such as field learning, action and reflection and project research. In field learning, students are asked to work with companies on case studies to discover and solve problems in collaboration with them. “Action and reflection is an experiential learning cycle in which students practise what they have learned at CBS in the workplace, reflect on the process and results and then apply that to the next stage of knowledge acquisition and practice. Students deepen their reflection with each other in regular seminars throughout the MBA. “Project research is a required course in the second year and aims to produce theoretical or practical results while deepening expertise. The final output is a thesis, case study, business plan and project report for all students.”
