State Football Playoffs Collinsville Panthers Fall In Opening Round By Brandon K. Pierce The Sports Ledger
Several northeast Alabama high school football teams concluded the 2024 season in the opening round of the AHSAA State Playoffs. In the Class 3A State Playoffs, Collinsville fell to Piedmont 46-28. Collinsville finished the season with a 7-4 overall record and a 4-3 in Class 3A Region 8 record. The Panthers scored a touchdown in every quarter of the playoff game, but the difference came in the first half. Piedmont scored 14 points in the first quarter and 19 points in the second quarter to pull ahead 33-14 at halftime. Collinsville outscored the Bulldogs 14-13 in the second half, but that was not enough to keep their season alive. Mason McAteer passed for two touchdowns and ran for another in the season finale. In the first quarter, McAteer connected with Gavin Lang for a 12-yard touchdown. His second scoring pass was a 36-yard play to Rajuess Rooks, which tied the game 14-14. McAteer rushed for a three-yard score in the third quarter. He finished the season with 156 rushing yards. Overall in 2024, McAteer had 1,020 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. The Panther’s final touchdown of the season was set up by a 70-yard pass from McAteer to Quintavious Rogers. Rooks finished the drive with a 20-yard touchdown run. Against Piedmont, Rogers had 104 rushing yards, 39 return yards, and over 100 yards receiving. For the season, he had 867 rushing yards and caught 24 passes for 451 yards. Collinsville was one of four DeKalb County teams competing in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs and the only one of the four teams to conclude the season in the first round. Fyffe, Geraldine and Sylvania all advanced to the second round of the state playoffs. Fyffe moved to 8-2 overall with a 66-30 victory over Ohatchee. Geraldine improved to 9-2 on the season with a 60-13 win at Locust Fork. Sylvania also went to 9-2 overall with a 27-9 win over Weaver. In the Class 1A State Playoffs, Valley Head fell to Wadley 68-14. The Tigers finished the season with a 6-5 overall record. Spring Garden improved to 11-0 with a 54-21 opening round victory over Victory Christian. Sand Rock and North Sand Mountain both concluded their 2024 seasons in the Class 2A State Playoffs. Sand Rock finished with a 5-6 overall record following a 49-0 loss to Vincent. North Sand Mountain also finished at 5-6 overall with a 42-6 loss to Tuscaloosa Academy.

Both Susan Moore and Pisgah advanced to the second round of the 2A Playoff. Susan Moore earned a 34-27 victory over Decatur Heritage, while Pisgah picked up the programs’ tenth win of the season with a 50-28 victory over Aliceville. In Class 4A, Cherokee County picked up win number 10 on the season with a 48-13 victory over Westminister Christian. With the win, the Warriors advanced to the second round of the state playoffs. Alexandria also earned a spot in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs with a 38-35 victory over North Jackson. Hokes Bluff finished the season with an 8-3 record following a 28-7 opening round loss to Madison Academy. In Class 5A, two Marshall County teams concluded the 2024 season. Arab finished with a 6-5 overall record following a 49-7 loss to Moody. Guntersville fell to Leeds to end the season with a 9-2 record. Both Boaz and Scottsboro advanced to the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. The Pirates sailed into round two with a 29-8 victory over Center Point, while Scottsboro rolled past Jacksonville 49-13. In Class 6A, Fort Payne rallied for a 24-23 victory over Pell City. The Wildcats started the season at 0-2. However, Fort Payne has won nine straight games, and the program will be looking for its tenth win in the second round of the playoffs. One of Fort Payne’s wins earlier this season was against Gadsden City. The Titans concluded their season with a 33-3 opening round playoff loss to Clay-Chalkville.

Cherokee County Among Teams advancing to State Playoff Quarterfinals Cherokee County Senior Tristan Brown (#4) runs the ball during the Warriors 41-14 win over Central in the second round of the Class 4A State Playoffs. With the win, Cherokee County advanced to the State Quarterfinal round against Brooks. Other Northeast Alabama teams advancing in the quarterfinal round include: Class 2A: Pisgah; Class 3A: Piedmont and Fyffe; Class 6A: Fort Payne and Oxford. Several teams concluded the season in the second round. These teams and their final season record were: Spring Garden (11-1), Susan Moore (6-6), Sylvania (9-3), Geraldine (9-3), Alexandria (8-4), Scottsboro (9-3), and Boaz (9-2).
