The Queen's Awards Magazine 2021

Crystal Doors

Crystal Doors is a Rochdale-based manufacturer of vinyl wrapped doors and accessories, producing bespoke doors of any size for homes, shops, hotels and healthcare facilities. The Rochdale-based company’s Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development is fitting reward for a decade-long commitment towards a more environmentally friendly manufacturing process. That commitment has seen the business reduce carbon emissions by 100% in just seven years, and cut energy use by 75% since 2015. The company’s premises in Rochdale now has an EPC rating of A+. These dramatic results have been achieved in a number of creative ways. For example, Crystal Doors’products are carefully cut fromwood that is sourced from certified sustainable forests, before being finished in hard-wearing vinyl. With the company producing over 200,000 individual pieces each year, the process creates a lot of waste. In 2015, the business installed a biomass boiler, which uses the waste from the manufacturing process to provide heat and water for its factory and offices. The installation is fitted with ceramic filters

to help clean the air, and a separate state-of-the-art dust extraction system ensures no MDF dust ends up in the Rochdale Canal. The process creates a more sustainable manufacturing process, and at the same time saves the business money. GREENTECHNOLOGY However, this is not the only way the company is grasping the opportunity to use green technology to drive efficiency. Previously, the company was assisted by the Greater Manchester Business Growth Hub to install power factor correction equipment to increase the efficiency of its electricity supply, resulting in significant cost savings. It also uses LED lighting and has installed solar panels. These innovations are part of a commitment to sustainability that is both professional and personal. Crystal Doors’ founder and managing director Richard Hagan has profoundly altered his lifestyle, becoming vegan and switching to 100% electric cars. Richard is also an important ambassador for the cause of sustainable manufacturing, spreading the word through articles, presentations and personal engagements. He believes Crystal Doors can be a model for any manufacturer seeking both sustainability and success. Because – despite considerable investment in green technology – Crystal Doors is a thriving business.

ENVIOUS REPUTATION The company employs around 34 staff in Rochdale and is growing year-on-year. Established in 1994, Crystal Doors has earned a glowing reputation for both its well made products and its quick, comprehensive service. Its customer base stretches across the UK and into Europe and the US. Richard believes the Queen’s Award will boost the company’s standing further. Most companies achieve the Award after multiple applications. The fact that Crystal Doors has been awarded with a Queen’s Award for Sustainability on its first attempt will make it the obvious choice for businesses and individuals wanting to make an environmentally conscious purchase.
