Cornish candle manufacturer St. Eval has been honoured with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development. This is the first Queen’s Award for a UK candle manufacturer and a pivotal moment in the company’s history. St. Eval was founded in 1993 and manufactures high quality, handmade candles, based on its farm in St Eval near Newquay. From humble beginnings, as a small family operation, St. Eval now employs over 40 people, with its candles and home fragrance products sold globally. Using centuries-old traditions, St. Eval keeps the artisan craft skills of the candle-maker alive, while innovating the process to make the best use of renewable energy sources and recyclable packaging. ‘TREAD SOFTLY ONTHE EARTH’ St. Eval’s ethos, ‘to tread softly on the Earth’, is embedded through all aspects of the business, with people and planet at its heart. Proudly producing its own sustainable energy via wind, solar and biomass, St. Eval is helping to reduce its carbon footprint and impact on the environment. To further support this, the business has pledged to be plastic-free by 2022 and is well ahead of this target, having recently introduced new 100% recyclable packaging for its Reed Diffuser Collection and Scented Tealights. St. Eval works closely with the RSPB, Natural England, Cornwall Wildlife Trust and local charities to support important wildlife projects and protect flora and fauna on its farm, which has gained High
Level Stewardship to further support this work. St. Eval’s Chief Executive Officer, Ian Greaves, believes a key element of the business’ success has been the people at the heart of the business. From supporting the protection of wildlife on site and championing plastic-free packaging, to helping customers understand the benefits of sustainable production and more. “As we’ve grown we have always strived to put sustainability at the heart of all we do,” says Ian. “I am immensely proud of the way the whole team has worked so hard at building not only a successful, but also an ethical and sustainable business, which continues to go from strength to strength.” product is a unique sensory experience. Drawing inspiration from nature enables the business to develop evocative fragrances to whisk you away to the coast, stir powerful memories and create ambiences capable of transforming your mood or space.
