WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR 2025?
Let’s Dream Big Together
Happy New Year! 2025 is here, and it’s time for a fresh start — with a new year comes new beginnings. It’s time to, again, think about all the potential you have and all the great things you can accomplish. For me, 2024 was a year full of unforgettable experiences. My family and I packed so much into the year — from traveling to Rome to celebrating our first Christmas with our grandson and even partnering with CAPTRUST. Now, as we welcome a brand-new year, I’m filled with excitement and anticipation for what’s ahead. I’ve set some ambitious new goals for myself because I believe stretch goals are the key to growth. Years ago, I heard someone say, “If you’re comfortable, you’re not growing.” That idea stuck with me, and it’s why I always challenge myself to push beyond my comfort zone. For me, growth happens in those moments when I test my limits and discover new capabilities. And now, to put my business hat back on, I’m committing to you, our clients, that while I think we have been good financial stewards to you
in the past, with our new affiliation with CAPTRUST, we will be even better. We are excited about what the future holds for you, for us, and for our great partnership. Now, what do you want to do in 2025? What goals have you set for yourself? One powerful way to turn your goals into reality is by writing them down with clear, specific details about what you want to achieve. Taking it a step further, consider creating a vision board to bring your goals to life visually. Grab a poster board and start cutting out images that represent what you’re aiming for. For example, if your dream is to take “the entire family” on a Caribbean cruise, print out a recent family photo, place it on your board, and add a picture of a cruise ship beside it. This simple yet creative exercise helps you focus on your goals and stay inspired to make them happen. If your goal is to run a marathon, find photos of the start and finish lines, and imagine yourself crossing them — then place those images on your vision board and find a training program to get started. As the saying goes, “If you’re not growing, you’re dying,” and I wholeheartedly believe this to be true. So, what steps will you take in 2025 to keep growing? I’d love to hear your stories and see how you’re pushing yourself forward! Thank you for your partnership and business. And thank you for being clients of Campbell Wealth Management and now CAPTRUST!

Biting Bullets and Serving Cold Shoulders The Unexpected Histories of Old Expressions
When you’ve had to “bite the bullet” and face a difficult situation, did you get a mouth full of gunpowder? Or, has someone’s “cold shoulder” left you with indigestion? While we hear these common expressions often, their quirky origins may leave you feeling like a “cat’s got your tongue.” From wartime practices to subtle ways to kick out unwanted houseguests, the stories behind these phrases may surprise you. Bite the Bullet In the days before painkillers and anesthesia, doctors had a bang-up method to dull the pain of surgery. Soldiers injured on the battlefield were given a bullet to bite down on as a way to distract from the aches. We still use this expression to describe accepting something difficult or unpleasant. At least we won’t chip any teeth today! Give the Cold Shoulder Nothing stings quite like someone snubbing you and giving you a cold shoulder. As early as the 1800s, cold shoulders were considered a polite way to tell someone you wanted them to leave. Party hosts used to serve a cold piece of pork shoulder or beef to unwanted guests to say, “Get out.”
Break the Ice We have all probably had to “break the ice” in conversations or awkward social situations, but its origins are far more literal. Ships used to be the primary mode of transportation for goods, and road infrastructure was many years away. While carrying goods to trade, ships often got stuck in ice. The receiving country would send small ships to break the ice and make a path for the trade ships. It symbolized an understanding and partnership between two territories.
LESS SPACE, MORE FREEDOM A Retiree’s Guide to Downsizing Smartly
In your golden years, downsizing can be a great way to simplify your lifestyle, reduce expenses, and free up resources for enjoying your golden years. But while the idea of a smaller home and less upkeep is appealing, the process can feel overwhelming. Here’s a guide to help you navigate downsizing with confidence. ASSESS YOUR NEEDS Before deciding to downsize, think carefully about what you want in this new phase of life. Are you looking to save money, move closer to family, or enjoy a more manageable space? Consider factors like health needs, access to health care facilities, proximity to loved ones, and the type of community that fits your lifestyle. EVALUATE YOUR CURRENT HOME Take stock of your current house and its costs, including mortgage payments, property taxes, maintenance, and utility
bills. Compare these expenses with what you might spend in a smaller house, condominium, or senior community. Downsizing often leads to lower expenses, but grasping the full financial picture is key. DECLUTTER AND SIMPLIFY Downsizing means making tough decisions about what to keep, donate, or throw away.
Start with items you no longer use or that don’t hold sentimental value. Create a system to sort through belongings and welcome the help of family, friends, or professional organizers to make the process easier. RESEARCH THE MARKET Explore housing options that meet your needs and budget. Look into communities that offer amenities that suit you, such as fitness centers, social activities, or easy access to public transportation. Visiting properties in person or virtually can give you a better sense of what to expect. PLAN THE MOVE Moving can be stressful, so start planning early. Hire reputable movers and consider downsizing services that specialize in helping retirees transition to smaller homes. If your move involves a large lifestyle change, take time to adjust and settle into your new environment.

THE SILENT HEALER MEET THE BOXER WHO CHANGES LIVES
At first glance, Sullivan is already a special dog. An adorable white boxer with a dark patch of fur around his right eye, he’s the kind of canine humans of all ages instantly fall in love with. If his cuteness wasn’t enough, he’s best known in his community for bringing people together in extraordinary ways. Originally found in a shelter in Coachella, California, Sullivan — who is deaf — lives in Oregon with his guardian, Allyson Ridling. A social worker and family therapist, Ridling has made Sullivan’s sweet temperament and calming presence a significant part of her practice. After bringing Sullivan to reading sessions with children (much to the delight of the little ones in attendance), she began including him in walking sessions with her clients. Fluent in sign language, Ridling has also introduced Sullivan to hard-of-hearing people worldwide via online video chats.
Early last year, Sullivan and Ridling received a 2024 Oregon Humane Society (OHS) Diamond Collar Award for their compassionate work. Thrilled by the honor, Ridling credits her animal companion with helping her clients find greater joy and comfort.
“His comfort helps those who are struggling to open up. [He] may not be able to hear, but his impact on the mental health of those around him speaks volumes.” Proud of her furry friend’s loving nature and many achievements, Ridling believes that animals like Sullivan can work wonders for people’s therapeutic treatment. “I think the human/animal bond works really well because animals don’t judge. They have unconditional love to give people. As [a] society, we could all work better to strive to be as loving and caring [and] as open-minded as a dog can be.”
“Some of these people just needed to reconnect with love and feeling this
undoubtable connection between the human and animal bond,” she says in a special OHS- produced YouTube video on the award. “That’s what they needed to help open up and take their next step moving forward in their life.”
The OHS was proud to honor Sullivan for his fantastic work with humans.
“As a therapy dog, Sullivan is a friendly presence for kids to practice their reading,” the organization says on its website.

The Central American country of Panama, home to the titular Panama Canal that allows easy passage of maritime traffic between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, is more than a hub for international trade: It’s a scenic tropical paradise. Just 30,000 square miles in size — smaller than South Carolina — Panama packs a lot of incredible sites into one compact package. The country uses the American dollar, so you don’t need to exchange currency to make a worthwhile trip there. Here are three locations you can look forward to on your vacation to Panama! PANAMA CITY Founded in 1519, Panama’s capital is a metropolis amidst lush tropical rainforests. Around 40% of the country’s population resides in the city, which is full of amazing historical and entertainment districts that attract tourists worldwide. The Casco Viejo historical district, comprised of Spanish colonial architecture, was named a World Heritage site in 1997. DISCOVER PANAMA An Unforgettable Tropical Paradise
ISLA BASTIMENTOS NATIONAL MARINE PARK This amazing national park, established in 1988, covers over 50 square miles and over 130 islands of the Bocas del Toro Archipelago, including the popular coral reefs of the Cayos Zapatillas. If you are interested in rubbing shoulders with monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, and countless marine species, this is the spot for you! PANAMA CANAL No list would be complete without mentioning one of the greatest engineering feats in human history: the Panama Canal. The canal, which runs for roughly 40 miles through the Isthmus of Panama, was completed in August 1914, just a month after the outbreak of World War I. The canal works via a system of locks, filled and emptied of water to raise and lower boats. Ships up to 950 feet long transport over 200 million tons of cargo annually through the canal. If you visit Panama, you have to see the canal for yourself!
