“We take pride in the quality of care we provide through working together.” - Wellstar North Fulton Medical Center culture statement

SHARED LEADERSHIP North Fulton Mother-Baby Unit benefits from shared leadership WELLSTAR NORTH FULTON MEDICAL CENTER A re-energized committee is making significant changes in areas including patient experience, patient safety and staff satisfaction. Shared leadership is making a notable difference at the Wellstar North Fulton Medical Center Women’s Center. A shared leadership council led by Sherri Jones, RN, IBCLC, was launched in 2022 to serve the unit, including the NICU, Mother-Baby Unit (MBU), delivery room, mother-baby surgical tech and unit secretary. Since that time, Sherri and a core team have been working hard to identify needs and respond with meaningful changes.

Several modifications have led to an improved patient experience. Among these: ■ A designated room for patients experiencing fetal loss ■ A clarified and posted visitation policy ■ NICU parent education booklet ■ New exit signs to help patients and visitors navigate the unit

Other innovations have contributed to improved patient safety: ■ Consistent IV access for all L&D patients ■ Disposable crib card holders that eliminate the use of paper clips around newborns ■ Refreshed education regarding allergy bands ■ Reminding team members of the requirement to carry a hospital phone

In the area of staff satisfaction, these changes have been made: ■ Increased capacity in the MBU storage room ■ Streamlined scrub tech/care partner duties ■ Use of nurse externs in the MBU ■ L&D to MBU transfer blackout

times established to avoid change-of-shift transfers

The North Fulton Mother-Baby Unit shared leadership initiative is an excellent reflection of the hospital’s culture statement, “We take pride in the quality of care we provide through working together.” n
