Business Development Manager for Cleanrooms UK M E E T Philippa King-Smith
I’ve worked for the business for 7 years but have been in the pharma industry for 14. I am passionate about the work I do in helping Ardmac to build relationships increase awareness of the huge value that Ardmac adds to their customers’ construction projects. As a degree qualified, mechanical engineer, I am passionate about increasing the profile of women in engineering. I can see small changes in the environment around me but it’s still not enough for my liking. That’s why I got involved in the UK board of the ISPE. My role supports the ISPE in growing its membership and encouraging businesses to take up the benefits it brings. On a day-to-day basis, I am here for my customers and connections to support them in any way I can. Providing advice, guidance and support for engineers and architects who need an ear to talk through their

projects. There doesn’t need to be a golden project at the end of the rainbow, my contacts know I am here for them and using the extensive experience pool at Ardmac, I will ensure that you get the best technical advice or solution to your problems. My inspiration I have always been into subjects like Physics and Maths, and it was actually my school physics teacher that got me into engineering, having put me forward to join a Women in Engineering Day at Salford University. As a 15-year-old, I remember a nervous bus journey into Manchester on my own. My nerves must have been all over my face as the bus driver made sure I got off at the right stop. It was such an eye opener and after that day, that was it, decision made, I was going to be an engineer. I qualified with a BEng in Mechanical Engineering in 2001 and have enjoyed some fantastic work experiences in a range of industries including food, confectionery, nuclear, healthcare and finally pharmaceutical. I saw my physics teacher recently and reminded him of this. He was really touched that he’d made such an impact in my life because at the time he said he was ‘just doing my job’ but for me it was a life changing moment. He obviously saw something in me and pushed me in the right direction and that just goes to show the power of teaching! Kudos to Mr. Archer of BRGS.
Homelife I guess I am the epitome of the ‘working mum’ – continuously juggling the work-life balance. With two children of 8 and 5, they certainly keep life busy and with the challenges of home schooling over the past 12 months, life has certainly been a roller coaster. But I am proud to say that I have come through and achieved so much in the last 12 months and I am looking forward to making this year, and future years, count!

Flexible Cleanroom Solution Delivered
Ardmac has worked alongside Colin Driver, an experienced Life Science sector Project Director, on a number of projects over the years, but we talked to him recently about his experience in creating a flexible cleanroom solution for his Client. The Client User Requirement Specification (URS) was not overly specific from the outset since the cleanroom facility, which caters for a number of small-scale manufacturing suites, was targeting R&D work. This often meant that the jobs carried out within the cleanroom could be different from month to month and so the internal equipment needed to be flexible enough to change or be removed by whoever was using the cleanroom space.
8
Colin enlisted the support of Ardmac to design, install and commission a turnkey, flexible cleanroom solution. He had this to say, “there was really no-one else I would rather turn to. What sets Ardmac apart is their ability to provide a total turnkey package and quality systems that can be adapted to suit most cleanroom requirements. I have worked on various projects with Ardmac and you always know they’re going to do a good job.”
The Outcome
In these kinds of projects, a URS can often be open to interpretation and it can be hard to deal with changing goals posts, but with Ardmac’s extensive experience, the project was delivered on schedule, to budget and to the quality required by the client. Colin’s final comments, “not only were Ardmac able to tick every box that we needed them to, but they did so with the strictest safety focus which put everyone’s mind at ease. I have worked with a lot of competing companies in the industry and if I was doing another job tomorrow, it would be Ardmac would be a definite consideration.” Ardmac are an international construction specialist delivering high value workspaces and cleanroom environments. If you have any current projects that you would like to speak to us about, please reach out to Philippa King-Smith who will be happy to assist you further.
The Ardmac Approach
‘Using a combination of the Dagard system, integrated with bespoke facility fixtures and fittings, Ardmac were able to meet the needs of the client, creating the flexible requirements as set out by the client in order to meet the cGMP standards. Philippa King-Smith, BD Manager for Ardmac commented, “we have a great relationship with a lot of industry suppliers which allows us to optimise the project implementation process and capitalise on the individual supplier strengths in product innovation.” Colin continued, “project management can often be complex within these types of facilities but my interactions with Ardmac were easy, not only are they a great team to work with but from a design point of view, they knew what we wanted/needed from the outset. It was quite painless really.”

At Ardmac, we are all very aware of the physical risks and on-site threats. We put Safety First in everything we do. But what about the dangers we can’t see? Depression, Anxiety, Stress and Suicidal Thoughts are just as dangerous as the tangible on-site hazards. Over the past number of years there has been an increasing number of employees in the construction industry suffering from mental health issues. A 2020 study found that 83% of construction workers have experienced a mental health issue. Mental health issues are in discriminatory and affect people in all roles. We place huge focus on regulations and on-site safety but mental health needs to be prioritised just as highly as wearing a hard hat or protective goggles. That’s why this year, Ardmac have chosen their 3 charity partners with a focus on mental health; Pieta House, Manchester Mind and The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity. Ardmac is aiming to help tackle this issue by increasing awareness of the mental health issues within the construction industry, providing the support and resources for our staff and raising vital funds for our charity partners. “SAFETY FIRST” - THAT’S OUR MOTTO AT ARDMAC, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE DANGERS WE CAN’T SEE?
Sky Blue is Ardmac’s CSR commitment. We work within the recognised pillars of CSR; Workplace, Marketplace, Environment and Community.

Pieta House has helped over 58,000 people to date in suicidal distress or engaging in self-harm. The charity provides a free of charge professional one-to-one therapeutic service, staffed by over 200 therapists, for people who are experiencing suicidal ideation, people who have attempted suicide and people who are engaging in self-harm.
Manchester Mind marked 30 years in September of delivering mental health support to the people of Manchester. It is committed to improving the lives of people with mental health needs in the area and delivers a wide range of services to support people’s mental health. Last year, over 6,500 people received support, information and training from Manchester Mind.
And finally, this is our first year partnering with Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity. This is a charity organisation who specialise in supporting construction workers and their families through financial, family and mental health problems. They have a 24/7 Construction Industry Helpline for those who would like to speak with someone in a confidential manner.
