The City Clerk will review your statement to ensure it is in proper form, content, and complies with the word count standards. Following the City Clerk’s review, the final candidate statement will be printed for you at City Hall on the appropriate form for your signature. The candidate must sign and date the statement before it is filed. Corrections to spelling, punctuation, and grammar will not be made after the document has been filed. Please proofread your statement carefully before signing it. Due to minority language provisions of the Federal Voting Rights Act, the County of Orange is required to provide election materials in the required languages. The materials covered by this Act include Candidate Statements. Therefore, all costs include translating and printing candidate statements into those languages. Filing a “Candidate Statement of Qualifications” is optional! Word Count Standard for Candidate Statement (Elections Code Section 9) The following are the guidelines for computing the word count: 1. Your statement may not exceed two hundred (200) words. 2. The “title of the office,” “name,” “district,” “age,” and “occupation” lines are not included in the word count – only the text is counted. 3. Punctuation marks are not included in the word count Symbols such as “&” (and), and “#” (number/pound) are not considered punctuation ................................................. each symbol is counted as one word 4.
